Auto Explore

Why is the auto explore function so brain dead? The most tedious aspect of the game is moving your scouts around the map exploring the layout. It just begs for automation. However, the auto explore function is so stupid that I'm afraid to use it. Even when there is a way around a monster, the auto explore function won't take it. Instead it frequently moves your scout right up next to the monster where it is immediately killed. Being a software engineer myself, I can't see how it would be all that difficult to program some intelligence into this function.

It's same for civ5, and you really don't want to use auto explore.

It's not so tedious to manually move the scouts and is more rewarding in doing so. On auto they move in a direction until they exhaust all movement, with roads this makes them skip uncovering locations etc.

You build scouts?

Of course I do. They are cheap to produce en-mass (well 4-6 depending how big the map is) early game to meet everyone and also spot all quest hubs, see resource spread, lairs / wild lands and plan my moves accordingly :)

Scouting (exploring) is a very important aspect of 4x games.
