Yesterday I thought I would make a plaster mold of a sphere so I can create Udus (african drum) at a faster (and thinner) rate by slip casting. Now, making plaster molds is something I am not unfamilar with. I use them in many aspects of my work from glass to metal casting.
So there I am making dumping plaster into the form. Now, to make a 2 part mold you have your form surrounded by wood held together with C-clamps. So I begin dumping the thick white-goo around the sphere stopping at 3/4 full. Ah-Ha (not the Norwegian 80s band), I had success! So I thought. When removing the white cube, I had created, from the wooden frame for a little tidy-up-job before making the 2nd part of the mold-- I noticed I wouldn't be able to get the sphere out of the mold even if I made the second half.
So you say... BFD (big f-ing deal).
Yeah well that mistake cost $85 leaving me w/ a parting gift of a 75 lbs plaster cube.
