Report from a Dummie

(That's me)

Installed ModernMix on Win 8 pro x64 and 8 Gb RAM.

MM will open for Settings configurations, but absolutely NOTHING else. Nothing ever happens no matter what I do.

From earlier I installed Start 8 and Fences, both Stardocks apps, and both running very well.

Q: Can it really be, that MM and Fences can't live together???

They do indeed work together.  I see that you activated MM so that's not it.  I will place a support ticket for you to get some more information.

Are you not getting the overlay in the corner of any launched modern UI apps?

Ah ... Start opening an app in Modern UI, look for upper right corner, and take it from there.

How could I miss that? Maybe because no one told me about it...

Anyway, this is a normal day in the world of a dummie!

On first run there should have been a dialog which explained about the overlay.

The hotkey (F10 by default) can also be used, but only from within a Modern UI app.  Outside of one of those it would do nothing.

This confused me at first too - having just installed ModernMix, I was expecting to be able to open modern apps either from ModernMix, or the Start8 menu, or the desktop, but they didn't appear there.

It wasn't made clear that you have to go to the Windows 8 Start screen to launch them first, and then you can pin them to the taskbar or put shortcuts on the desktop or Start8 menu.

No problem really, but it would be nice if the ModernMix interface listed the modern apps available and gave the option to put a shortcut on the desktop, or the Start8 menu, or pin to the taskbar.

Having said that, it works great for me. It's kind of sad how much effort is needed to make Windows 8 work with the desktop as the main screen. Microsoft could have simply made it an option - 'Retro' or something :)

Modern apps are already listed in Start8 under Modern UI Applications in all programs.

Any modern applications you have run since installing ModernMix are listed under the app settings page in the ModernMix config where you can right click them and use the menu to create a desktop shortcut if you wish.  Taskbar shortcuts are not permitted to be created by applications and can only be created by the user via the Microsoft provided method.

Did you see a dialog after installing describing how ModernMix worked?  Did you have an earlier build installed?
