Drag & Drop and Renaming does not work in Start8 1.1

I am using the new Start8 1.1 on Windows 8 Enterprise x64,
and neither drag & drop or renaming entries in the All Programs tree works.
This functionality simply seems to be missing from version 1.1, despite the
claim in the changelog that it has been added.

Update: problem solved.

It turned out I needed to reboot my system for the new functionality to become available.
How embarrassing. :-)

I'm actually not getting all the changes such as drag and drop to work for me... (so I'd suggest this thread not be closed. ha)

I've tried restarting, and the drag and drop still doesn't work for me. I've even tried uninstalling and re-installing again.

Perhaps I may need to delete all the files and settings before reinstalling, but then I'd have to redo all my options and setup just to get it back to how I have it, and I don't even know if that's gonna fix it.

as i pointed out in the other thread i just posted on again in response to your post on that one, neil, it does say 1.1

i mean, if it wasn't 1.1, i wouldn't have gotten the option to right click on an empty space of the start8 start menu to go to the configuration dialog and the new start orbs and so on...

let me ask you this. does the 1.1 update depend in anyway on the original shellstyle.dll files? because that's the only thing i can think of that may be affecting this as i used ultrauxthemepatcher to replace a couple files like that in order to use custom windows 8 visual styles before i did the 1.1 update.

i wonder if the drag-n-drop functionality in the all programs menu could rely on that, but it doesn't make sense why it would, and still doesn't explain why the registry key talked about at the bottom of the changelog doesn't even show up for me.

As a general rule I wouldn't recommend replacing any of the core MS files either via actual hacking of the originals or redirecting them in the registry.

But I wouldn't have expected that to have caused that problem unless the theme you are using is incomplete, that might upset the drag image code and so abort the drag instantly.

It is worth trying the left and right mouse buttons when dragging.  You should get an icon to drag when you do so.

Does dragging off the main page of the start menu do anything?

right. i had went back to using the original Windows 8 theme when trying the drag-n-drop with 1.1, and when i would left click to drag an item, i would just get the red circle with a slash through it icon.

WAIT A SECOND.. since doing the system restore to before the theme patching thing, (i'm back on 1.03 now), it's not giving me the red circle with a slash through it icon when i try to drag something now.. in this case, the drag just simply doesn't work.

but on 1.03 now, i still don't understand why i'm not getting any options to pop up like you said would happen in 1.03 when you right click on a blank space somewhere on the start8 start menu. (as in the option that says "configure start8" or the other 2)

NEVERMIND.. tried upgrading to 1.1 again now (without the system files patched) and drag-n-drop is still working the same way before, giving me the red circle with a slash icon anytime i start to try to drag any item on the all programs menu

Is there any registry key setting that might be off in Windows that wouldn't allow me to drag-n-drop something..

There's gotta be something in Windows telling it that I'm not allowed to rearrange things in that all programs menu

So you are getting the icon when you drag?

The red X means cannot drag here.  Can you drag to your desktop from all programs? (do not actually release the drag or the files would be moved to the desktop)

Wait.. it lets me drag icons out of the folders that have been created under the all programs menu. is that the core of the drag-n-drop functionality?

as in, there's probably no reason to just drag around the icons directly in the all programs menu as start8 keeps them alphabetically organized anyway.

is that the correct functionality?

Yes, I just tried, and when I take the icon over to the desktop area, it changes and lets me move them to the desktop..

So it is working correctly for me afterall? And if so, I still don't understand why I'm not seeing that registry item in the location listed

I had the same or similar problems.  Could drag the start menu icons to the desktop, but not into any of the start menu folders even though the indication below the icon I was dragging said that it was going to allow the operation (no red X).

The fix for me came from this excellent Windows 8 forum (searched on the "trustedinstaller" phrase that I was getting when trying to do the drag and drop from the Windows File Explorer application.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2814-take-ownership-add-context-menu-windows-8-a.html

I then right-clicked on the Programs folder under Start menu (see path below), and chose the "Take Ownership" administrator option that will appear on the context menu after you run the above registry tweak.  Works nice for me and looks like the extra context menu option may be useful for other instances when Windows 8 tries to "help me" too much.

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Since this is my first post here, thanks to the StarDock folks for making Windows 8 a pleasant experience for me.  It was definitely not pleasant when first installed WITHOUT Start8.

ha. that's weird. i actually go to that forum too and i've done the same thing you're talking about. i wonder if that's why it didn't seem to be working before or if i just wasn't understanding that the functionality didn't apply to moving regular items already in the all programs list that aren't inside a folder up and down (as it already keeps everything alphabetically organized)

i still can't figure out why i'm not getting this registry option to hide the tooltips in the start menu though
