How does the update check work?

Stardock Central is not running, but I still get messages for available updates. I do not find something in autostart or in the msconfig startup part. So how does it still check for updates while being closed.
I want Stardock Central to check for updates for itself and the software only when it is running. Is this possible?

It starts up via the Task Scheduler.  You should be able to disable it from that.
