Why cant I place buildings (newb q)

Noob question here, no doubt.

Not sure why this is a problem. I thought you should be able to left click once on the building you want to build and then it would show you where the building would be built as you move it around the perimiter of the city. That's what is happening on all the videos I've seen. So you click on the building in the list, then click on the build location and it starts building it there.

However when I click on the building in the building list, the cursor just remains a sword and clicking on the map does nothing.

I can still build buildings by clicking on the building and then the "build" button, or double clicking, but then I don't get to choose which way I expand.

 

Nothing in the manual about this. Can someone tell me what's going on?

You probably do not have manual placement option turned on in the games options.

Go to your options:

Go to advanced options:

Check the box about manual improvement placement

You should then be able to place your buildings to your hearts content. Hold down shift and roll the mouse button to rotate the buildings.

One has to wonder though, why this is even an option, or off by default.

No problem. They have it off by default because they don't want people to necessarily micromanage building placement (which can get tediuous late game, although I have fun with it). Also, it does help the AI because players can abuse the placement of buildings and AI doesn't quite have that ability.
