Not Happy.....

Updated to Windows 8, current version of Fences doesn't work well.

I am not pleased that I have to pay for an update for a program that was free a short time ago. I will likely uninstall and look for an open source version on Fences, it not worth $10.

While understandable . . we like getting paid for our products too.  Thanks for your earlier support and know that we are here if you can't find anything as good.

C'mon, rkinne01: Who are you kidding? "Not Happy"? You should have titled this post "Never Happy (unless everything's free forever)".

You posted once before about how you were unhappy that Deskscapes cost $20 but you wouldn't have unlimited downloads forever. Folks explained what you should do to fix that. No "Thank you", or "Thanks, that worked."

Now you're complaining that "all updates aren't free forever". I don't remember you complaining that you got something for free, nor do I remember a post by you expressing your thanks for the free program.

In fact, you downloaded a free program designed for XP,Vista and Windows 7. For some reason you believe that extends to Windows 8, that development, etc. for this program is somehow something Stardock owes you. Well surprise, it doesn't. Stardock employees (like you, I'm guessing) like getting paid for their work.

*giggle* open-source fences? If you like, I can make you a dark transparent desktopx layer and you can arrange your icons over it. That's about as free and functional as you'll get for free. Not aware of anything like Fences anywhere else. I could make some resemblance of a Fences clone in DesktopX, but I'm not going to.

what version did you download the fences pro or the Fences 2.0 ?
Sorry to hear that you have problems, i recommend uninstalling fences and then reboot then go and download it at https://www.stardock.com again make sure you grab Fences 2.0 and not fences pro.
If you dont want to overcommit in terms of money the Object desktop is a good deal you get access to betas it includes windowblinds fences window fx start8 deskscapes tiles and iconpackager + additional programs to en hance your desktop for 50 bucks i think thats a pretty good deal.
PS windows8 isnt out that long so you will have to wait a little for updates, but they surely will come.

So here is my situation:  I was using the old fences and responded to the opportunity to try the new fences for 30 days thinking I could always go back to the older free version if I didn't see the value in updating.  I have subsequently attempted to delete the new version and return to using the old version.  But Revo uninstaller tells me that both versions are contained in a single program file and to be careful which files I delete.  However, I have no idea which files should or shouldn't be deleted to get rid of Fences 2 while at the same time saving the original version.  I now get a nag screen every time I attempt to use Fences telling me to purchase Fences 2 as the trial period has expired.  Can anyone suggest what to do in these circumstances?  A more skeptical person might conclude that this trap for the unwary was somehow part of the intended result.  But not me, I am asking for a solution before any such thoughts even occur to me.

@roloccolor  V1.01.143  I have a feeling that there won't be any updates for this version, money is tight for us right now and we're not willing to spend it on this program wight now.

@DRJBHL Not that I owe you an explanation but I didn't respond to previous post due to the death our 17 yr old at the time.  I'd tell you what to do with your attitude but I'm sure I'd get a forum ban for it....

I am very sorry for your loss.

I don't see any attitude in what Doc replied to you... also I'm struggling with how you could have even posted a complaint about software having just lost a family member.

Ditto. Which is why I am not jumping to Windows 8, because of its cost, few advances over Win7,(some in the wrong direction) and I am not willing to risk losing the functionality of my already paid for software.

Windows 7 Ultimate was not cheap. I see no need to dump it for the "next shiney new thing"........all 40 bucks worth of it.

rkinne01;

Sorry for your loss, but no one could have divined that. The facts about what I wrote remain facts, and it was about your attitude, not mine.

Sorry folks, but as someone who used Fences 1 Pro for a good while, I've found Fences 2 to be a piece of you know what.  No exclude icons, icons disappearing off the desktop, having to run system restores several times to get it all back - I'm tired of it.  Back to Pro 1 I go, until they work out the problems.  And note that it's now five weeks and they haven't fixed the exclude icons function, which is central to the workings of the program.  Guess they're short staffed.

I use disk imaging software which allows me to test any program and then restore system back to the way it was without having to deal with uninstall, registry settings and such.  I use Paragon Disk Image which is a great program.
