Intelligence gathering - Spies

I have been playing the game and watching others do it via Let's Play videos, but the more I play the more I wonder why it's so simple to gather information about your enemies.

You can always click on a city, check its power and even its build queue.

Wouldn't it be much more interesting if this info was only available after a successful spying mission?

Perhaps the info you can get without a spy is incomplete or only and estimate, until you have proper means to know.

IMO it would make it much more interesting to fight wars as you are presented with an extra layer of fog of war, but perhaps the current system is there for a reason and spying has been left out on purpose?

What do you think about this?

I wish there were an option you can't go into borders of a kingdom without war or without spying, or without spending influence/mana or gold to pay for your constant presence there.

When you can't pay, you get expelled.

That would be fun, as well as open a myriad new spells for spying and monitoring....
