Increasing diplomatic relations

I feel like I'm missing something regarding how diplomacy is supposed to work and my attempts to foster relation always seem to fail.  Im my last game I was playing as TEC Loyalist and was trying to get friendly with another TEC Loyalist AI.  I researched all the diplo bonus tecs and all the envoy mission tecs and was sending envoys to one of their planets.  As soon as my envoys got to their planet they would open fire on them, so I'd pop diplo immunity, preform a mission, then get out of their before I was destroyed.  This process went on for about 2 hours and I was rewarded with a measly +2 to relations for my troubles by the time they finally killed my last envoy and I gave up on it.  Screen shot below is from the game just after the last envoy was killed.

So what am I doing wrong?

Envoys should only be used after a cease fire is reached. Still, it looks like you have enough for one. Are you sure you don't have locked teams enabled?

God damn it!  Yes, yes i think I did.

...so if you can't use envoys before getting cease fire, what's the best way to bolster relations until that point?

Well you technical can, as you were doing, it's just unless the planet is defense less you're going to have that same problem of them shooting at you.

Your general idea was pretty good. Getting those diplomatic bonus techs fairly early is a must. Then you'll want to pick a neighbor you want to get rid of and starting destroying his stuff. Military relations are the main thing that makes or brakes alliances. Attacking someone else's enemy will get you on their good side. This also means if you want to make an alliance with an AI that's attacking you, you're probably out of luck. Also note that depending on the factions involved, getting an alliance early maybe impossible. The TEC Rebels for example really hate anyone who isn't TEC, and the Vasari Loyalists aren't particularly friendly to anyone but themselves either.

Your first goal is to get relations to 2.5, so you can get a trade agreement. Assuming you have trade ports, your relations should go up slowly but steadily thanks to the trade modifier. If you have the needed relationship with them for a ceasefire but they don't really like you, sending them resources is a very good way to get a ceasefire quickly. After you have it you can quickly cement the alliance with envoys.

What is the point of getting a trade agreement other than a boost in diplomatic relations? Do you get some kind of trade bonus, or do their trade line count towards your max trade line if you link up?

You get a trade income bonus - it shows if you mouse hover over your credit income at the top of the screen.

If I remember correctly their max trade chain is added to yours. If both you and your ally has a chain of 2 then it counts as a chain of 4. At least that's what Seleuecia says his tests showed, I haven't looked at it myself.

Yes.

Ally trade earns you a tremendous ammount of money.... always do it.

I've almost always played with fixed teams on which means we get the trade agreement by default - but I haven't noticed a difference to my trade income. Next time I play I might look out for this.

Also, I gotta say TEC pacts are the best in the game. Trade, missile, armour and supply pacts are all great
