Start8 doesn't find any programs

I tested Start8 on 2 PCs. If I choose the Windows 7 Style it doesn't find any programs if I type the name in the search box in the start menu. Documents, Files and Control Items are found. In Windows 8 Style programs are found but I don't want to use this style. The list of recent programs also works. But my main use for the search field is finding programs.

I use a final German Windows 8 64 Bit.

What's wrong there?  Does Start8 use the windows search index or an own index?

Are you showing items on the all programs tree view?

We have had one other report of something similar and it seems to be tied to the native language of the OS, but we are not using hard coded paths for the locations to search so we are still investigating.

We use the Windows search index rather than reinventing the wheel and making our own.

I can see all programs in the programs tree view. Also the search in the normal Windows 8 menu works. I also recreated the Windows Search index.

I will see if we can setup a repro case here as it should be listing them and does on english installs.

I assume a search for cmd.exe or metro does produce results.

Yes, cmd.exe is found and with "metro" I see the Metro Apps. As examples the Reader and Skydrive apps are also found.

Hi there, I have the same Problem. German Win8 32Bit.

I can remember, that in earlier Start8 Versions I could find my Programs. Now, with 1.0 i can“t. Maybe you can go in that direction.

I installed English as additional language and with English it works. So the problem is probably if you use another language than English.

It certainly sounds like some sort of minor glitch being caused by the OS language.  Hopefully we can sort that pretty quickly and easily.

We have someone investigating this right now.  Hopefully we can sort this for a 1.01 update.

The issue has been reproduced so hopefully we should have a fix for this next week.

Quick update : The issue is now resolved in internal builds and so future updates will show complete program search results for non english installs.

I am hopeful we will be able to put out the update at some point next week.

Hi,

I have version 1.03 and changed the language of my Win8 64 from english to german. Now I can't find programs with german designations. For example if I search for "Calculator" I can find the program. But if I search for the german name "Rechner" it doesn't show. In the programs list the shortcut is but called "Rechner".

I'd appreciate if you could look into this issue. I think it would be easy to reproduce if you'd just install another language.

Thanks,

Virgil

This is also happening on my English install of Windows 8 Professional x64 so it's not limited to non-English installs.

The program shows up in All Programs, and is even in the list of recently used programs, but when I search for it all I get is the program folder.

What version of Start8 are you using and what application are you searching for?  Also where is the folder that contains the shortcut located exactly?

I think I found out what was wrong. Windows Indexing had still the english designation saved and thus I did not find the german names of the shortcuts after changing to german language. I stopped indexing and it's working now.

Nothing in the way to purchase Start8 now anymore :-)

It happened in 1.03, 1.03a, and now 1.09 beta. However, I cleared my index through Windows and let it rebuild, and then rebooted after it finished. Now everything is showing up when searching.

False alarm, it looks like.

I am using version 1.16 (paid) and this issue just started. I'm going to clear my index through Windows and let it rebuild overnight.

I am using the 1.20 version and I have the same problem with Windows 7 style. The searching is not working. What to do?

I've seen the problem twice now; 1.31 paid, Windows 8.1 x64 English.  Clearing the index fixed the problem the first time, and I'm sure it's likely to fix it the second, but it's inconvenient to not have document searches work for a couple of days while the index rebuilds.  Is there anything I can do to provide you debugging information before I start the re-index process?

Strange; the problem resolved itself after a couple of reboots and no manual changes to anything.
