FE 1.0 keeps spamming my firewall for a connection.

I was under the impresion that the internet requirements for FE would be removed on release. However FE continues to request a connection even as i'm on the sov creation screan.. and the first time i denied it previously it locked up. So what gives?

Edit: to be more clear.. it spammed for a connection on start up which I allowed.. now its again asking for a connection on the sov creation screen.. why is it constantly trying to connect?

The first time I started it up i denied it a connection and it locked up.

Edit2: and again its asking for connection while im still at the sov creation screen. wtf.

The first option under the General section of Basic Options is "auto login."  I'd make sure that isn't checked otherwise it'll try to log you into SD's servers.

Auto login was off, and even if it wasnt it would't explain why it connects 5 or 6 times on start up.. then once every 5 or 10 mins during game play.. then 3 or 4 times on closing. no matter how many times I allow it.. it still keeps on trying unless i perm. allow it. Wtf is it doing connecting every 5-10 mins? (during gameplay none the less)

I'm not gonna suggest any nefarious silliness. But its seems a bit excessive so I'm rather curious why its continually connecting.

Check your prefs.ini file in My Documents\My Games\FallenEnchantress to make sure that it did indeed set AutoLogin to 0.  If you're logged in, it will refresh the login periodically so that you will be logged in to unlock achievements, etc.  There's also checks for if anyone on your Stardock friends list has sent you messages, refreshes the friend list, etc. All of these checks happen in background threads so they shouldn't affect performance unless you actually have the overlay open.

It's weird that it's requesting permission each time, though.  When you gave it permission the first time, did you only give it a one time permission?

Yes. The "simple" solution would be to give it permanent access or permanently deny it.(inevitable solution i should say)

but the fact that its connecting so often makes me curious of wtf its doing.

and Autologin is indeed set to 0. So again that's not it. So what IS it doing. Is it really trying to check my friend list etc even though i'm not logged in???

really the only reason I bothered to post was the first time I denied it.. it locked up, but the fact that it continued to pop up and ask for connections after I allowed it made me curious of what its doing in the background if autologin is turned off. Its more of a curious post than a need for support.

To summarize:

If autologin is turned off, and I'm not logged in.

Why would it continue to try to connect?

I ignored it during the beta assuming it was part of the beta system but now I know its not. Its simply trying to connect.. over and over. I would think it wouldn't even try to connect if autologin is turned off. Yet it does... repeatedly. Even after its allowed, it will want to connect again.. and again.. and again.

Just doesn't make sense if im not logged in.. it can't keep track of stats, or freinds etc.. so whats it doing?

No, it shouldn't be trying to do anything if you're not logged in, but I'll run the code myself to make certain.  I'll also make sure that none of the Facebook code is trying to do anything in the background; that's something I didn't add so I don't know off the top of my head.  Did you install from Steam or Stardock Central? We're not using Steamworks so I don't know if Steam's overlay's calls would be made while (a) it was hidden or (b) if they would look like they were coming from FE, but I can check into that as well.

A quick test would be to run FallenEnchantress.exe directly from your install folder instead of via Steam.

WOM early adopter.. no steam for me. ( its not even on my system)

Im poking you about FE trying to connect and you think i run steam..

Edit: it doesn't seem to be doing it now. I logged in once and logged out and it seems to have stopped. Maybe authentication?

This is from the stardock webpage:

"Internet connection required for activation and to play."

So, always on internet required?

I have zero problem with an activation on install.

And Steam doesn't bother me because it's offline mode works fine for me.

But any single player game that wants a constant connection to the internet does NOT get my purchase.

I never bought Starcraft III because it seems blizzard keeps changing their policy on this nonsense.  My policy never changes.

Stardock needs to clarify this or for me they are in the exact same category as Ubisoft.  In other words - NEVER PURCHASE.

The beta required internet (or a creative work around)

The release version was to have that removed to my knowledge which was part of the reason I started poking around about it. I can Deny it connection and it works fine(other than the first time I started it up and denied it.. it locked up).

Its a one time activation deal, but there are the optional achievements etc that you need to connect for if you want to use them.

I'm in the same boat as you as far as constant internet connection.. but I wont even use steam.. its up there with ubisoft in my book.

Yeah, the release version does not require constant Internet after install.

That would be excellent news, this looks like a very interesting game.

I'm waiting to hear it from Stardock, though.  Just in case they've changed their minds.

The 1.0 version has no copy protection or any requirement to be on the Internet to play. The only internet connection it needs is when you first launch it to type in your serial number to associate that game with your account so that you can get updates and future discounts.

Applications today are a curious bunch - they simply must tell their creators where do you live, what kind of neighbours live next to you, what games do you play, music you listen, if everything is legal, what rig you have and when you last upgraded, what size of shoes you wear and if they smell, do you have children perhaps, whose consumer needs have not been satisfied by the market?

All that in the best interest of you, the valued customer no doubt, to better understand your needs and the secrets of your soul, in order to serve you the best in future...

Just kidding. It must be some mistake. Surely.

I didn't have to do this.. but I assume its because I had the betas installed previously.

However the first time it tried to connect i denied it access through my fire wall and it locked up.

Then afterwards wanted to connect every 5 mins until i finally logged in. (note game would still run, so thats not the issue.. issue was why was it trying ot connect over and over DURING play while not logged in)

Issue is such a strong word.. annoyance is probably better lol.

OK, so I found the internet calls and neither of them need to be called if the user is not logged in, and neither of them is sending any data about you or your computer: they're part of the code that checks for an automatic update.  I'm still looking into what's calling them since they're set to not get initialized if the user isn't logged in, but I figured you'd appreciate the update.
