Noob Question regarding install limits (if any)

Hi there, I was considering purchasing object desktop, but I am concerned about install limits if any exist. I have a few computers at my house and I would love to use this software on all of them if possible, but I don't want to keep spending $50 for each machine or after a set amount of installs on a few PCs. So, basically, once I buy object desktop am I allowed to install it as many times as I want on as many machines as i want under my account? Thanks.

Hi, fac7orx ....Stardock has a comparatively 'liberal' limitation on multi-use.  The idea is that the software can be used...by you....on each of two computers...which typically covers your desktop...and your laptop, provided both are yours.

The expectation is that if there were to be more than 'just' two then any others would more likely be used by other people who should [fairly] purchase their own licence/s ....;)

Hi Jafo, thanks for the response. I just need a bit of clarification if you don't mind. So, there is a limit of 2 machines for the software. Does this include multiple installs on each machine? Also, if I reformat one of the computers do I lose a use? How exactly does this 2 limit work? Does it check how many are in use via the internet, does it just tick off by how many times it is installed, or does it count per windows installation (reformatting knocks out a key or use)?

On a separate note, if I were to just purchase start8 (that's what I am really excited about), does it also utilize this 2 limit install as that would definitely be something I would want to put on more than 2 computers in comparison. I really can't stand metro and Windows in general without a start menu on any machine :(.

For clarity's sake, here is the current EULA:  www.stardok.com/support/software_eula.aspx

fac7orx .... the limitation ultimately becomes number of activations.  People sometimes reach that limit after a reformat or two, but it's a simple email request to have such a limit reset.   Needless to say it cannot be simply 'open season' on licence use/abuse.  It is a commercial consideration afterall.

As for 'multiple installs'...I have Windowblinds on this machine at least twice...via Virtual Machines - that's not an issue as it's actually the same box...;)

start8 would be the same - a two [of your own] machine limit, as with any software there may be options for a 'volume licence' but typically software is only ever one licence = 1 install [or re-install following format, etc]...;)

You forgot the c in stardock. It should be  www.stardock.com/support/software_eula.aspx ,but thanks for the information, I appreciate the response.

Thank you for clarifying this. Unfortunately, I wasn't expecting install limits. So, while I understand your position, I will probably use classic shell instead of start8 as it is free and it does not have any install limits.

Maybe you guys will release a basic version for free or maybe a version without these limits later on down the road. Either way,I really do like the software you guys make though so maybe I will shell out some doe and check it out later on down the road. But, again, thanks for clearing this up and allowing me to make an informed decision rather than purchasing it and then finding out after the hard way later on. The tech support is rather good here, so that is definitely something that appeals to me.

Hi Jafo, I wanted to install Fences on my laptop as well so I've been looking for this info... I have to say I'm a bit confused because I've found several posts saying the same: up to 2 personal machines per license... But once I finally found the software EULA (which for some reason is not accessible from the software itself), I found that it states one computer per license at a time, period. What gives? :vulcan:

You can.  It's Stardock's 'liberal' restriction/interpretation/dispensation where [even] their EULA may mention single-use = single licence.

The intent is that if it/they are both your machines laptop/desktop you're only 'really' operating one at any one time.

Typically there are activation limits per licence which regulate whether there's any over-doing/abuse of this...;)
