Can't pin to Start8 Menu or Drag/Drop

Just as the title states, I can neither pin items to the Start8 Menu, or drag/drop recently used applications. If I right click on anything and select Pin to Start Menu (Start8)... nothing get's pinned whatsoever. It doesn't matter if recently used items are enabled or disabled.

The only time ANYthing shows up (the "all programs" section displays fine) is if I have recently used applications enabled, but it still won't allow me to pin anything to the menu, nor will it let me drag/drop any of the recently used applications.

On initial install did the Windows 8 start menu shortcut appear pinned on the startmenu?

Are you local admin, or a user with some restricted permissions?

No.

Local Admin, Start8 ran/installed as admin.

Does the following directory exist? (replace <username> with your account name)

 c:\users\<username>\appdata\roaming\microsoft\internet explorer\quick launch\user pinned

If so, does the StartMenu subfolder also exist and does it have anything in it?

Any update on this? I'm having the same problem. I see "Pin to Start menu (Start8)", "Pin to Start" and "Pin to Taskbar" options when I right-click on things in the Start8 menu. Here's what happens when I select each of these:

  • Pin to Start menu (Start8): Nothing seems to happen. The item selected doesn't appear on the Start8 menu and the menu item doesn't change to "Unpin from Start menu (Start8)" as one might expect.
  • Pin to Start: The item gets pinned to the regular Windows 8 start menu, but the menu item doesn't change to "Unpin from Start".
  • Pin to Taskbar: The item gets pinned to the taskbar and the menu item changes to "Unpin from Taskbar".

I've also tried right-clicking from the regular Windows 8 apps page and other places, but I don't see the "Pin to Start menu (Start8)" there and the regular "Pin to Start" from those locations doesn't add it to the Start8 menu.

The only option I see on the left-hand side of the Start8 menu is "Windows 8 Menu". The directory referenced in the above thread does exist for me and I see that User Pinned contains these three folders:

  • ImplicitAppShortcuts (empty)
  • StartMenu (just "Windows 8 Menu")
  • TaskBar (the things pinned to my taskbar

Well, Found workarround.

If the .....\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu is used, I could copy links there...

Voila...it works.

See in this folder to use your links:

c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

browse it for desired links and copy them into the folder mentioned before "C:\Users\myself\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu"

Hope it helped.

Would be fine if it works normally - do not know how to navigate easily NON IT person - like my parrents...:)

I have the EXACT same issue but I'm now running 1.1 BETA (downloaded as 1.09 BETA)

Version 1.1 BETA on Windows 8 PRO joined to a domain and running on "real" PC.

I have tried non beta and I have tried to reinstall different versions but still the same issue.

I used the workaround and copied .lnk files to c:\Users\user.DOMAIN\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu\ and that works great but it's a bit of a hassle to do that everytime.

Thanks for reporting this and more importantly what you believe is going wrong.

We will see about addressing this problem in a build in January.

Well,

still have some problems (diferencies between Start8 and Win7 behavior) in this case.

I updated into last version 1.11.

Situation is the same - I can pin app into start menu only by copy shortcut into

C:\Users\myself\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu

Well i can deal with it.

But the pinned apps are sorted by the name. What if I would like to sort it my way? Is it possible?

I can drag and drop App in the start menu, but nothing happen - and need to click outside of menu and return back to see nothing happened.

Is there any solution for this?

Thanks.

EDIT: Well it is not sorted by the name, but more recent shortcuts are on the top (I use WORD and EXCEL offten and those are firts or second every time)

Only to be sure:

"myself" in the path needs to be your profile. My profile is named Elda, so it needs to be C:\Users\elda\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu

I'll bump this with a "me too". On Start8 v1.11 I find that I cannot use the "Pin to Start Menu (Start8)" functionality on Windows 8 Pro. I can use the workaround to copy a .lnk file into the
C:\Users\<MyUserName>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu path and the pinned item does show up on the Start8 menu.

Hello,

As a test, please try to 'Pin to Start menu (Start8) from a desktop icon, from a Windows explorer window and from 'Recent used application' in Start8 itself and let me know if any \ all fail.

Please let me know if you are able to drag and drop to the Start8 menu.

Outlook 2013 refuses to pin from the desktop (rightclick or drag-n-drop) or "All Programs" after I hit "Remove from this list" on the recent apps list. I manually pinned it by copying the shortcut into the mentioned AppData folder. Drag-n-drop or rightclick-pinning works fine for other shortcuts. Version 1.12.

Sigh - I was about to say how upset I was about the fact this wasn't working....

Right after that Stardock central told me there was an update.... and I updated - and .... it is now working :)

Thanks Stardock :)

I was having the same issue, or at least I thought I was, until I began re-exploring the Start8 Configuration screen options. Had never bothered adjusting the "Allocate room for at least xx large icons" under the Configuration item on the left-hand side of the Start8 Configuration screen so. out of curiosity, decided to give that a shot. For my particular screen resolution I set it from the default 10, or whatever it was, to 18 and immediately saw all the items pinned that I had previously thought weren't being pinned. Anyway, just thought I'd mention this as something else to check at the outset in case pinned items don't appear to be showing up.

I've the same problem with the latest release (1.16).

With most icons I can't pin them to Start8 from the "all programs" list, but I have to create shortcuts to desktop and pin them from there.

I'm logged on with an AD domain user.

Thanks.

So very frustrating. I've purchased 3 licenses of Start8 to use on all of my pc's. While it is great to have the Start button back, you can't say that it brings back the Windows 7 Start button features when you can't use the pin to Start8 menu or the pin to Taskbar. I'm using version 1.11, and I've tried re-installing the product several times. I am an administrator, and I do have the folders mentioned above. If I manually put a program into those folders, they appear, but that is not what I call a functioning program. I will not be purchasing any additional Stardock products until they get this fixed. Very disappointing. Nothing like rubbing salt in a Microsoft wound.

Are you saying you cannot use the OS to pin to the taskbar either?

Also please update to the latest version of Start8 which is 1.16.

Also are you on a domain?

No, I can do it from Windows Explorer.

i'us union the automatic update option. I ran it manually today, and it says I'm current. I'll check again.

Yes, I'm running Windows Server 2012 Essentials for my domain.

It seems that I'm running into the same problem with Start8. I thought that this problem was fixed with the product. A manual copy/paste to the User Pinned\StartMenu folder works every time. Using "Pin to Start menu (Start8)" results in nothing happening. Is there an update for the product that addresses this issue?

PS: Like mthomas080297, the impacted machine is a Windows 8 Pro-based PC that is connected to a Windows 2012 Essentials server (which does provide Active Directory services). I am also running the beta 1.16 version of Start8.

[Edit]

Strangely, Windows 8 "Modern" apps can be pinned just fine to the Start8 menu. Likewise, non-Modern apps that have shortcuts placed on the desktop can be pinned to the Start8 Menu. Icons within the Start->All Programs list (that are not "Modern" Windows 8 apps) cannot be pinned via the "Pin to Start menu (Start8)" function.

Okay. Upgrading to the 1.16 release on my two Windows 8 Pro systems resolved the issue, but not on my Windows Server 2012 Essentials system.

I still have this problem and it is not resolved. My domain-joined Windows 8 Pro PC cannot use the "Pin to Start Menu (Start8)" option on any of the start menu items that are listed in the rebuilt "All Programs" list of programs.

Working Scenarios:

1. Copy a shortcut from "All Programs" to my current user's desktop. Right-click on that newly-copied shortcut and select "Pin to Start Menu (Start8)". This pins to the Start8 menu successfully.

2. Search for a word, such as "Firefox". Choose the basic word "Firefox" and not "Mozilla Firefox" and the shortcut will be pinned successfully to the Start8 menu. Chose "Mozilla Firefox" and it will not pin to the Start8 menu.

3. Right-click on any of the shortcuts in the recently-accessed list of programs immediately under the pinned Start8 menu area and select "Pin to Start Menu (Start8)". This will result in the shortcut being pinned to the Start8 menu correctly.

Would someone from the Stardock team please explain why it is that trying to pin shortcuts from the "All Programs" menu does not work?  Thanks!

EDIT: I wanted to add that I did uninstall and reinstall Start8 with no actual change in behavior found.

Same here, except using the search option (your #2) doesn't work for me. I've also tried a reinstall, but it doesn't help because none of my Start8 settings are removed during the uninstall.

I've been using and upgrading Start8 since before 1.0 on this machine, and an option to wipe all Start8 settings would probably fix this issue...

Also, I've noticed that shortcuts with periods in their name (such as a version like "3.0") get their names truncated when they're pinned. Try naming a shortcut "Test.123" and pinning it; the pinned shortcut will only say "Test".

What version are you using of Start8 as I believe that was fixed long ago.

If you do have a domain joined machine that has pinning issues, you may want to contact support as we have a test dll to try.
