fighting Pioneer WAI?

I trained a Pioneer in a fortress with nearly all buildings and 4 Essence and heart of fire enchantment.

The pioneer was attacked by 3 shrills and I hit autoresolve and thought I'll lose the pioneer, but he beat those 3 shrills due to an attack rating of 4 fire and max. health of 36HP.

Is this WAI?

I consider it a bug my pioneers doesn't get 3 attack from tarth blood

But yes that is cool
