OT...Please, need tech help for 2 problems.

After I applied *all* the latest patches from MS, 2 problems have surfaced which I absolutely cannot seem to fix. Sys specs at end.

The first and biggest problem: After a period of inactivity, my computer shuts down. I come back and there is the box on the screen which says "It is OK to shut down your computer." Normally, when *I* shut down, I don't get that. My box just shuts off. I have looked in the Power Options cpl and it is set to 'Always On', I have checked the BIOS and there hasn't been anything changed since installing the patches. I have looked everywhere I can think of and it all looks the same.

The second problem: Win2K doesn't like my version of PCAnywhere. It still works though. Prior to installing the patches, there was never any indication that there was a problem. Now, however, I get an warning similar to 'Windows 2000 has a problem with AW_Host.sys and it has been disabled. You may restart it from... (something in the control panel which doesn't exist.) This warning appears when I power up and when I power down. I have renamed this file to something totally nonsensical (I don't ever use host functions with PCA.) PCA still functions correctly. This warning does not impede the loading or the closing of the OS, but I would like to stop this from happening.

If anyone can help, especially with the first problem, I will keep you in my prayers and be eternally grateful.

Thank you,
David

werewolf....I have often been wary of patches....especially when I couldn't really see anything that was 'wrong' with the function of the OS....eg, there's quite a few XP 'patches' that I haven't/won't bother to add. A really good 'rule' with OS's is 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'...the eternal route of patching upgrades and upgrading patches.....one slip and you're knackered.
Win2K got the better of me.....when Wowexec.exe decided to chuck in the towel....[it's used for 16 bit installers, for example]....and Cad2000 has a 16 bit installer [as does a lot of other proggies]...and I'd spent days and days trying to solve it....[one install kept wow OK, but would memory-dump when shutting down....weird].
Ultimately I moved on to XP, and after NOT using one of my Virus proggies, never had another problem...the OS does exactly what it's supposed to do...

On the other hand, XP demolishesd my drive. And it tried to set up an 1.5G swap file on the new one (stupid!).

werewolf: I meant power saving settings within XP. XP completely ignores what's enabled or disabled in the BIOS (at least it does on my machine, disabled a harddisk in the BIOS and XP still tried to read it, had to unplug the damn thing).

Jafo... Thanks for the reply. I usually don't apply patches. I really don't know why I did this time. I'm sorry I did, that's for sure. Lesson learned

Crae...That's why I'm not going to upgrade to XP What I've got on my machine now does everything I need and with Object Bar, I get some of the XP functionality. I'm sticking with Win2K. This is the first time I've ever had a problem with it in years, since installing.

Then again, if memory serves me right, XP is not much different from 2000, which has power saving settings also.
