What did I miss? Impulse <> Gamestop <> Steam?!?

Hello,

I'm probably guilty of not following stuff so closely, what what did happen here?

I got used to Impulse. fine. Sometime ago along the way that obviously changed to Gamestop which for me somehow seems much worse. But fine.

Now 8 month (!!!) after I got the message that my preorder for Rebellion got charged (wasn't the game supposed to go live last year?) I remembered it again and - wohoo....apparently it went live a few weeks ago - and so I wanted to install it - but no mention of it on Gamestop. At that I found that I obviously purchased Metro2033 sometime GS/Impulse - I thought "cool" - wanted to install it but first thing it wants me to do is forcing a Steam install ? what the hell? A game purchased on Impulse/Gamestop forces me to install another invasive piece of software? no way.

Now, as I couldn't find Rebellion  beside my other Sins licences on GS I looked for the email ...and hey..."The free Steam application is required to install Rebellion." WTH?

Wasn't Impulse initially a Stardock program meant to be there for Stardock programs? Why would I need Steam now - a software I only find negative comments about on the net? And why would I now need 2 pieces of invasive software to manage my different Sins licences instead of just one?

What went wrong there? Or do I miss something? Do I really need that Steam-crap in order to play Sins Rebellion?

Steam is awesome, Gamestop Downloader is awesome, Origin is awesome, even Beamdog is awesome.

You missed that.

And a bunch of other stuff, apparently.

Stardock sold Impulse to Gamestop well over a year ago. After that, Impulse started selling games that required Steam to run, and Stardock decided that since they were no longer competing with Valve to make Rebellion steamworks for some reason...

I assure you are not the only one not pleased by the changes, and when Rebellion was revealed to need Steamworks it was often suggested that they should email all preorders to inform them as such. I take it that never happened though.

What is it, specifically, that upsets you about this particular retailer?  Of the complaints you've read, what issues would directly affect you?

If you:

- Have a reasonably stable connection to the internet (yes, I'm aware that some people don't so perhaps this gripe makes sense in your case).

- Don't suffer from some form of obsessive paranoia - especially concerning the neglible amount of resources that Steam uses while active.

Then you'll have no trouble playing this game on Steam.

It's not THAT particular software, it's all of them. I'm a non-up-to-date, no-social-network-member user who has some strange, nostalgic ideas about property and such stuff.

I admit I did copy some stuff when C64 was still "the thing", but afterwards I bought my games and software always. I actually likeld owning them. Ever since I made one exception from that: I accepted (grudingly) that I would have to use Impulse to play Stardock games. The sole reason for that was that it was run basically for the products of one company mainly, which cooincidently produced the games I mainly cared about in the past few year.

Also Impulse was only needed to install the games, afterwards I would have never to open it again.

That's not true for all the others out there.

(even though I thought Steam would need constant internet connection to play the games - which basically would have meant I could write off the money paid for rebellion, but that seems not to be the case ... it "only" spies on me once a month from what I read meanwhile )

And lastly I think it's just WRONG, that when you buy a piece of softweare via one retailer it then FORCES you to install another piece of invasive software. And now I already need 2 such programs if I want to play the different stardock games I purchased in the past.

As for Rebellion, there it's probably my fault not having read the confirmation email fully. But I was sure I would find it on Impulse/GS once it got live...I never thought it could be any other way.

But as I said...I'm just some nostalgic dinousaur, who (wrongly) believes that he should actually own stuff he has bought.

No, just apparently someone who wrongly believes he doesn't own the stuff he bought.
