militia dying at the end of the combat

maybe the question has already been asked but ... why militias die at the end of a battle ? as soon as you kill the last attacker, militias defending the town fall on the ground gasping for air, is it to avoid giving them experience points ? because next attack they are there again
luckily normal units survive and prosper
