Immediate Rebellion Minidump [Aka Black Screen Bug]

So, I was gifted Rebellion, but after installing it from steam, entering my stardock info, and whatnot, I thought to myself, "Now I can finally start playing!"  So I clicked on the shortcut..  Waited a second, screen went black, thought to myself, "It's working."  And then I heard that heart-sinking, life-draining ping that as a modder I have come to know all to well.  It minidumped.

I got kind of worried, but thought to myself, "Maybe it just needs another go.  The icon for Rebellion's shortcut hasn't even loaded properly yet.  Let's try again."  So I did.  Once again, ping.  Again and again, I pressed that button hoping for relief, but to no avail.  With each ping, I felt myself die just a little bit inside.  Eventually, I thought to myself, "You know, it's probably just because I haven't restarted yet.  Some programs require that.  Maybe that's the problem.  The shortcut's logo isn't even working right yet."

So I restarted.  After a quick reboot of laptop, I decided to try again.  "I bet it'll work now!" I thought to myself as I noticed that the shortcut's logo had loaded properly.  I clicked...

Darkness...

Ping!

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!  XO

So at this point, I ask you guys, what's going wrong and how should this be fixed?  I could potentially reinstall, but I'd like to test anything I can now because my internet is abysmally slow.

EDIT: I have already sent my minidump files to them.  I'm just wondering if this is known/has a cure at this point.

This is more commonly referred to as the Black Screen Bug and is an issue with NVidia's drivers being bad.  There is a dedicated thread on the subject. STOP REVIVING THIS!

Please send your minidump files to stardock so they can work on your issue. :)

I did and it checked out.

Try renaming the ClientRegistry.blob -> ClientRegistryOLD.blob   (steam folder)

That's a common game launch issue with steam.

I'll try it later.  I ultimately decided to try reinstalling.

Still auto minidump with the blob.old thing.

This error is more commonly known as the Black Screen bug and appears to be due to NVidia's drivers being wonky.  There is a dedicated stickied thread on the subject.

My fix for this issue seemed to be related to another app I was running at the same time - I was using an X client called "Exceed on Demand" - I noticed this app was being brought to the foreground when Sins died.  I stopped Exceed and started Sins and it started fine this time, but I noticed that the default resolution Sins used the first time was very low (1024x728?).  After I reset the resolution to my "normal" (1600x1200), I was able to run all my apps (and Sins) with no problems, so I can only guess it has something to do with the default screen resolution settings.

It's all very bizarre.  I have to use integrated graphics and either use my laptop monitor or use my external with the game windowed for it not to crash.

Idk..  It's weird..

Same problem here, I am updating my nvidia drivers. I will edit this if i get it to work.

Edit/Update: Updating the video drivers worked for me.

I still haven't been able to get mine fixed, I get the black screen and then a minidump, I have updated my video drivers nothing, reformatted the drive and nothing.

Add me to the black screen club. All files updated and sent in. Tried window mode as well. Maybe it will resolve itself when my desktop PC is repaired if it is my laptop causing it.

#:(  Let this thread die already.  It's the black screen bug which is caused by NVidia's wonky drivers.  The reason I didn't recognize it as such was because I mod extensively so calling something a "black screen bug" was something very different from a minidump but when I finally read the dedicated thread on the subject, I realized that I wasn't a normal user, hence the confusion.

If it's not working for you, try the following:

  • Disconnect any external monitors (works for me)
  • Play in windowed mode (works for me)
  • Use integrated graphics instead of NVidia (works for me)
  • Update NVidia drivers (works for others)
  • Use NVidia graphics card only (works for others)

Mods, if you see this, please lock.
