12 principals of 'the scene'

12 principals of 'the scene'

came across this tonight. i dunno what 'the scene' is. written by one of the persons who administers customize.org.

===========================================
i would like to take a moment to present to you the 12 thing s i wish to see as the foundations of the scene:

1. the scene is created by artists and hackers and only artists and hackers
2. the scene is targetted toward artists and hackers
3. the scene is dedicated to the combination of art and personal technology
4. the works of the scene should be available to all, even those too poor, or young to afford payment for professional solutions to same tasks
5. we must do everything we can to prevent strong anti-site rivalry in the major sites of the scene
6. we must do everything to foster cooperations and interworking between the various sites
7. the scene should always favor software that is free and most customizable
8. the scene should favor open source software, as it is both free and customizable
9. the scene should stay away from hardware as it.s non-free-to-copy nature makes it less available to some users
10. the scene must be as open as possible. we musn.t never forget that the same kids who just read and download today are the ones who will lead it all tomorrow
11. the scene should lean away from closed licenses. remixing should be allowed as a learning tool, as long as proper credit is given
12. the scene should foster free communication, but allow moderation of people who only post to offend
=========================================

i'm not a hacker or artist. so i guess i'm excluded.

According to Mirku:

http://www.customize.org/forum/1318

I am an "evil", "slimy", "opportunistic" example of all that is wrong in the universe.

Does he know why he thinks these things or was he assigned these beliefs by case worker? Sheesh.

consider the source... who knows what his universe consists of.

miriku once described the art world as being the schlock galleries in Long Beach.

I think miriku has a crush on Brad....

but it's probably just puppy-love...

AJC....i thought 'principals' was intended....meaning the Godfathers of 'scene'...

In the beginning was Shoggot.
Shoggot begat miriku.....

Ad nauseum...

Point of order; does it matter what someone like Miriku thinks? Worrying about Miriku's opinion is like the Prsident of the US worrying what some unregistered voter thinks.

It is kind of funny that these kinds of rules and demands are typically made by people who aren't actively making skins, haven't written any skinnable apps, and don't even pay for a skin site.

A typical profile seems to be that it's some guy who is an admin of some site but doesn't own the site (or pay for it) and doesn't make skins. Or put another way, give a small person a little power and it corrupts them.

It gets funnier:

http://www.customize.org/forum/1318

I am "evil" because:

--Begin Quote--
"evil -> doing things for self betternment at the expense of others

slimey -> covered with a viscous substance that lowers the coefficient of friction and adds a specular sheen

i dont care how he treats his family. i dont care how he treats his employees. i dont care how he treats his kids, dog, pets, neighbors and his mailman

my perception of him is limited to what he is doing in the scene. and as much as i love jack valenti and hilary rosen, i dont think we need another one here."
--End Quote--

For those of you who don't knwo who Jack Valenti is (I had to look him up) he's the 78 year old head of the MPAA.

Hilary Rosen is the head of the RIAA.

A rather bizarre couple to be compared to. Apparently working at a software company that releases freeware and shareware software that is skinnable is pretty much the same as being in charge of music and movie studio organizations whose critics charge that they exploit artists and gouge the public.

This is pretty ironic consider the treatment Miriku has given to Treetog, Alexandrie, Jafo, and others (i.e. the actual artists in our community who create stuff).

Notcie he still can't explain WHAT exactly you're supposed to be doing to the "scene." I think you hit the nail in the head: He hates all things related to Capitalism, and thus it's ok (in his own twisted worldview) to lump everyone together.

ps--- I'm the one posting as Beren. The name Firestorm was already taken.

"you can do whatever you want. you can charge and order the users into your slavery. i just think that art sites should push free solutions more then expensive ones "

If I had parents who were slaves I would feel deeply insulted by that.

the thread at custo dissapeared. I assume it got deleted by an admin because of the name-calling miriku was doing. I thought it was interesting that most everyone's replies were just asking for miriku to stop insulting people, stop being so rude etc. The only name calling in the whole thread was miriku calling frogboy an evil person. It's a shame some people can't differentiate between that action and the inevitable response it generates, which in this case I think stayed remarkably civil.

Maybe it was the post I put on there pointing out that Stardock, WinStep and Litestep were the ones that made custo and skinz as big as they were with their refferralls. I found them by finding Stardock (because of Windowblinds) and was encouraged by the Stardock site to go to customize.org. Not just a link, but a statement that said "be sure to check out customize.org for more skins" plus a link. When you uploaded a skin to Stardock's site you got a message that said "be sure to upload your skins to customize.org too".

sad that they want to paint a bleak (and false) picture of reality for all the new users that come along.

How did Custo fall to these levels? Meanwhile in another thread another Custo admin is explaining that he doesn't like WindowBlinds because it uses memory. This is an Admin of a SKIN site. (WB's overhead is less than notepad). Why use any of these programs, they all trade using some memory in exchange for customization.

After I announced my final post, I stopped going. Interesting that they deleted the thread. We close threads that get pointless eventually, but we never delete them.

Then again, maybe it's a step towards quietly removing miriku as well.

I can't even get to Customize.org at all. I wonder if they are having problems...
Of course, the other day I couldn't get to them, either. I don't know how much bandwidth they have, maybe maxing it?

They can remove the thread...but will it ever go away?

Customize is up and down all the time for me. Always been like that. Ah crap, why'd they delete such a fun thread...
