now the next question is: what was the number of players online, both in total, and in peak.

aka: when the devs are all like, one 10th of 1% of people playing sins play multiplayer, so we can get away with not adding basic multiplayer support, how many orders of magnitude are they of by?

Well, those that play rebellion are probably the more dedicated players which are probably more likely to play online.  I'd expect that they'd be right though.  They know how many people get on ICO and how many copies they've sold, so...

How many copies you've sold doesn't make a meaningful comparison unless you're comparing it to the number of people who have ever played MP, at any time. Total sales vs people playing MP right now isn't much of a comparison because it doesn't factor in all the people who never play SP either.

Ideally you'd get a bunch of samples of how many people are playing Sins at a moment in time, and how many of those games are multiplayer. With a good number of samples you could figure it out fairly quickly.

Now obviously 0.1% is wrong since with 1000 people playing today that'd be 1 person in MP, which means zero games. We know that's not true.

Sins never had any great appeal to me for multiplayer beyond a lan environment with some friends, but even so doing it now with Rebellion appeals even less than usual. As a beta, with numerous issues and incomplete (or missing) races, I'd rather play Trinity then get into a Rebellion match in it's current state.
