[Suggestion] Upgrade Units to different unit types.

Would it be possible to implement the option to upgrade existing units to a different unit type.  For example you have archers on foot armed with a short bow, and then develope Horse mounted archers.  Rather than have to make a new unit to replace the already leveled up units could there be an uption to upgrade the existing units to the new unit type?

For instance:

Archers w/ Shortbow --> Horsebowmen w/Longbow

Guardsmen w/warhammer --> Cavalry w/ mace

etc.  Just a thought thanks.

I kinda like it just the way it is. A guardsman unit with warhammers would have different training than a cavalry unit with maces. That's my 2 cents anyway. I'd sorta like to be able to give them magical accessories as I could afford them, but I'm good with the way it is.

We definitely need an option to chose which unit type to upgrade to. It could be restricted to the same kind of unit (ie melee infantry, or even axe wielding infantry), but that would at least allow us to chose the exact weapon we want (because the one selected by auto upgrade is not always the one we'd prefer to use when we can chose between a magical and a mundane one for instance), and the accessory slots:

If there is a "best" option to upgrade an unit equipemnt to, unit design is compltely pointless and a waste of time and effort, and if there is no "best" option, but various trade offs, we'd better be allowed to chose how exactly we want to upgrade each unit.

Well, i was just a little surprised when i upgraded my mounted mages with firestaves into lightning hammer and shield mounted shocktroops - had no idea until then that it would upgrade into a diferent unit type, although i was suspicious when it offered the weapon upgrade since i hadn't ressearched bows yet and did not have the snd staff researched yet. was sort of amusing since then my three traits aded to the unit were completely useless lol.

Hammers and staves are in the same upgrade path so that's probably why it happened.  Likely we should have the magic staves in their own tree.

[edit] or be able to choose what we upgrade too.

This! :D

I would like it if I was able to see the to-be upgraded unit, or choose what unit my old unit "Upgrades into".. It is terribly vague ATM and I don't like to use it (sending troops to they're deaths is fun too anyways :))

Agreed. If I recall correctly SMAC did a brilliant job upgrading. I believe it gave you a list (with pricing) to choose from when doing the upgrade. Damn, I miss that game, may go digging in my CD pile and install that for a quick game or two... or 3 or 4 late nights worth. :)

GalCiv2 has the best upgrade feature in any TBS game. I would love to see something like that here.

To people who don't know, check out Galactic Civilizations 2: Twilight of the Arnor on Stardock Central. It is the best Space TBS game I have ever played. The AI is the best in any game I have ever played. Also some sweet Stargate, Star Trek, and Star Wars mods for it.

In this game, when you click on a ship, a button can take you to the upgrade screen. On that screen you can choose to upgrade the ship from any of the ship designs you have made that will work for that ship, or you can design a new ship and then upgrade to that. GalCiv2 had alot of excellent UI designs that have yet to make it to this game. Kind of surprising considering we have the same UI people working on it now. Maybe it is a work in progress though.
