Windows backup software

I use Vista Ultimate's built-in backup software and it has helped a couple of times.  recently though, I realized I had lost a file but had no idea when.  Unfortunately, the Vista backup software will not search its catalogs for a particular file.  The only way to find it is to try to restore from each backup set until you accidentally find the one the file is in.

Anyone using a backup program that will locate a file for you by searching all its backup sets?

The Vista backup catalogs are binary.  If they were XML or other text, I'd write my own search utility.

Acronis is what you need.

I disagree. Since I installed Acronis 2012 last October it's only done one scheduled backup: and that was on a Thursday, not the Monday it was supposed to be doing them on. Beyond that the only time it has tried to create a backup is when I've restarted the computer. I personally wish I'd never bought it and heeded the poor ratings the 2011 version got from users on Amazon. But as I have purchased it, I'm damned if I'm going to just throw the money away and not use it, even if I have to make the backup myself. I only hope that it successfully restores the images I've created should I need to use them.

Then you're doing something wrong or it's installed incorrectly. The app works flawlessly.

Correct... there are tutes for it, Starcandy. Try uninstalling and re-installing it first (if you are still entitled to re-download it)..

Hopefully, if she's smart, she has the installer archived.

Starcandy, I use Acronis 2011 and as Yrag said, it works flawlessly. I use it on Windows 7 64 bit, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.

Hmmm, I have EaseUS but don't see the option to select a file rather than a backup set.  My problem is I may not know which set contains the lost file.  I'd like it to search the catalogs and show me which set(s) contain the file.

Does it have that feature?

Jim -

The approach I take is if there's a software malfunction, it could stem anywhere from a borked download on through interfering software, and incomplete knowledge as to operation of that software.

Therefore, I recommend retrying the download.

Check out the "mount image" feature... should show you the contents of the backup...

Hey sweetcheeks, what is up with this picture of my SSD?

That's the Windows MBR. When Windows 7 doesn't see another Windows installation (ie: active/ primary partition), it creates the reserve partition.

My questions would be what and how much are you backing up?  How often do you need things backed up?

@Rosco, I do incremental backups weekly with full image backups about every 3 months.

I've retracted my previous statement. I thoroughly uninstalled ATIH and installed the latest build (6154), and things have started working now. Presently set to perform differential backups four times a week. Still not impressed that the download or installation was borked, but that's software for you, I guess.
