Not enough grain? Gamereaker.

So Im using .76 and i've tried 3 test games on a small map. First thing I noticed is AI gets wiped out almost immediately while looking for a place to settle. I fare better managing to recruit some heroes, but ultimate there is NO places to settle it appears. I've been all over the map looking for this mythical grain and eventually ultimately die due to how slow the leveling is and how there is no possibility to make any cities to rest up and restore hp at.

This isnt fun, and its a game breaker. Now im all for finding the right spot to settle but this is just boring, is there only 1 spot on an entire map to settle? As it is I doubt I'll ever manage to build a city until this is resolved. Talk about disappointing.

By grain do you mean the bonus resource.

If you mouse over settle with your sovereign or pioneer , you can see the grain/materials for each fertile tile.

indeed, it seems you think that a city needs some of the bonus food resource, but any fertile land will do. The food resources improve on the food situation, but they are not mandatory to build a city.

I didn't see less fertile land or food resource in the updated beta.

It also shows the grain and materials in the terrain window, if you enable that in the options screen.

No I mean fertile tiles to settle on with my Sov at the very beginning of a game. I've seen the npcs scrambling about the map as I have been and i can tell you on my 5th try the "Settle" Button has not lit up. I've racked up more conquest victories just trying to find some place to settle, and still havent found anywhere to build a city.

The only time I've been able to settle was in the tutorial.

Are you using a random map? I know that some of the maps under Load are rather bugged.

Which sovereign are you using?  If custom, did you choose the "no settling" trait when you created the sovereign?

I have been using the maps under load, but I will try random to see if that helps. Also I did not pick the no settling trait when i made my sov so on that front im okay i think.

Lord William T. Riker, friend of Q, I would also suggest that you do some random maps and make sure the resource density isn't set to something really low.

Your knowledge of my name and affiliations is impressive friend, I have taken your advice and random maps work much, much better, i've been able to settle a city as soon as the game starts, and as far as I can tell, so have the npcs now. I think those maps under load is just plain broken.

Ah, Klingons. No wonder you defeated them. (from same episode if I recall).

Anyway, yea, my understanding is that the premade maps are not done. You should stick with the random maps.

Might an option activated as default be considered, where if the selected unit has the "Settle" ability, grain yields from map squares are shown?

It would be great if there was an overlay that you could see 'fertile' settling spots with other than the light green hue. Something with more contrast would be nice, I have a hard time seeing these areas without actually having the pioneer near by.
