Trinity Edition DRM?

None, yeh?

Hi! I'm really into supporting companies that don't use restrictive DRM in their games, so I've recently found out about SoSE and I've heard it doesn't have any DRM. I then heard it requires Impulse (online activation). Does the game require Impulse or is it optional? If I was to install the game and activate it on Impulse, could I still install it on a different PC from the disc, but without an internet connection?

Thanks,
Alex

It requires that you register to update.  You can play the version on the disk without even having a key.  To update, you'll just have to register it with impulse, at which point yes, you can still install it from the disk.  I do so myself regardless, it's quicker than downloading the entire thing.

You have to register on Impulse to get updates, but other than that, nothing.

Edit: Now I'm getting ninja'd by Psy? Fail, me.

So, if I don't want to update I don't have to register? All the Trinity edition content is on the disc and installs without any DRM? AWESOME!

Thanks guys!

P.S: Is this the same with GalCiv2 Ultimate? (I don't wanna create a whole new thread in another forum to ask a similar question)

There's a catch. The game didn't get really good until the latest patches.

As for GC2, pretty sure it's the same way.

Thank you so much!

Edit: Is there any other games that have this type of "not-DRM"?

Downloading and installing Impulse really isn't that burdensome.  You don't need to run Impulse every time you want to play, only once every couple months when a patch is released.  There aren't any good reasons not to register with Impulse.  Besides, if you don't register you can't log onto Ironclad Online, which means that you'll be stuck with having to play single player against AI and won't be able to access the 5v5 games on the Diplomacy server (they rock!).

Most Stardock published games have this sort of system. The disk you buy has no protection whatsoever (you don't even need it in the CD drive), but to get patches and support they want to know you are an actual customer. I assume Demigod is also this way, though as mainly a multiplayer game it isn't as much of an advantage.

That said, you really should register and get the updates regardless. Mods and multiplayer typically require the latest patch, and you can completely uninstall impulse after you are done updating. And should the internet for some reason catastrophically fail at the same time your hard drive dies, you still have the version on the disk to install on a new computer.

The nice thing about Impulse is that it is actually a non-intrusive tool to aid you with updating to the newest patch as well as to give you a back up. All of these things are 'if you want to use it' versus 'mandatory'.

As stated above, you only need to run Impulse when you want to patch. It does not need to be running in the background or on your task bar to run the game.
