Recent Technical Difficulties

I am having some technical difficulties with Sins and its expansions since I switched from a NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 to a NVIDIA GeForce 6200 (so I could play Battlefield 2, since it was on sale on Impulse). I even updated to the latest drivers, and I am still having problems; specifically, the game will start up just fine, but when it gets to the menu screen, it is extremely laggy to the point of unplayability, the computer actually becomes unresponsive. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, yeah, Kitkun, I should probably talk to Support, but I thought that maybe someone could solve the problem here!

Make sure that you don't have any browser windows open in the background, especially Chrome. For some reason Chrome makes even the menu quite laggy.

The game generates a detailed 3d galaxy just for the menu. If I were you I'd disable the 3d rendering for the menu to improve performance.

C:\Documents and Settings\<YOUR USER NAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting\user.setting

(that's the location on XP; it's in a similar but not identical location on Vista and 7)

Set

GS_CREATE_GALAXY_FOR_FRONTEND

to FALSE instead of TRUE by using notepad.

Is the game itself unplayable? I usually play small maps, and the menu (when in 3d) seems to lag a whole lot more than when I'm actually ingame.

Obviously, other solutions would be to disable all of the special effects and to reduce the quality, and to disable antivirus and exit other resource-hogging background programs like Impulse and Steam...

The thing is, I never had these problems before I switched graphics cards. Yes, the game is completely unplayable.

Frankly, the game running before is a fluke.

Well, I contacted Support, and got the standard bounce back reply; I suspect that I just need to get a new computer of my own instead of trying to work with this older Gateway. I noticed that, and the new one is even better, but it is the one having the problems.
