Strange crashes

ok so I use to get the out of memory error (which everyone had) now I get crash to desktop. At first it was when autosave kicked in, but after reinstalling it and able to play several more turns now when I try to make a pioneer, it crashes.

I am using version 1.2a. I love the game, even with the crashes but I hope this can get fixed. It use to let me go further than each time I loaded but now it seems Im at a limit. Im on a 64 bit 4gig nvidia geforce 9600 GT. Thanks and hope someone can help
