Why is channeling needed
Anyone know how to disable channeling and let abilities just run?

Channeling is a part of an ability that forces the ship who is doing the channeling to stop everything until the ability terminates.
It is needed for awesome stuff like drain planet and cleansing brilliance that would kinda be a bit more OP if you could fire and bomb while using the ability. The Domina needs it just because they felt like putting it there.
If an ability is channeled, you must channel it for as long as you use the ability. You can stop channeling buy giving the unit another order but then you stop using the ability.
It is needed because that's the way they made the game, they wanted variety to give the units and races a different feel.
Modding
Yeah... that. When in doubt - cheat by changing the game. Get all Kobayashe Maru on it (spelling).
