Serious problem after uninstalling Windowblinds

I was having a problem with Windowblinds not applying skins, so I uninstalled it. Now when I rebooted my PC, there are no user profile icons on the login screen. Any ideas anyone? Didn't really want to spend a day fixing a PC :(

When uninstalling Windowblinds, first the Aero skin and default Windows icons should be applied, and then Windowblinds should be uninstalled through Impulse.

The rest depends on whether you have icon packager or not.

If you do, simply reapply the icons you want. Make a registry backup.

Enter ‘regedit’ in Search box and Open Registry Editor; Navigate and delete the entry HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Shell Icons

Exit Registry Editor, Logoff and login to see the default system icons restored.

If this doesn't work, it might just be easiest to do do a system restore to a time before you uninstalled Windowblinds. Then do as I said in the first sentence.

I'm going to speculate that you were running the trial version and the trial period had run out and that you didn't reset back to the default Windows interface before uninstalling WindowBlinds.  If so, you can try reinstalling the trial, resetting back to default and uninstalling WindowBlinds.  Hopefully that will fix your problem.

Ooops, Doc was quicker then me.

I wouldn't expect uninstalling Windowblinds would cause you to lose User profile images.  What's more possible is WB's not applying skins AND the icon problem are themselves both caused by some other issue.

Are still able to logon?  If so it's a simple enough matter to select user icons again.

Nope, can't log on at all, even in safe mode.

Was not using the trial, I'm a Object Desktop subscriber

Can't get into Windows to edit the registry.

Going to restore a system image I think :(

Try booting to your Windows DVD and repair or restore to an earlier time.

Before trying a restore...try Doc's suggestion....via safe mode ...;)

Restores should only be a last resort.

Computers got Truecrypt on it that seems to stop system restore working from the DVD.

Cannot log in via safe mode there's no user profiles shown on the logon screen just as in normal mode.

if you running login studio = try ctrl+alt+del twice at blank login screen

Yeah I had login studio, tried ctrl+alt+del no luck.

Thanks for all your suggestions, time to get Acronis going and restore from backup I think. Could this have occured from me installing a Beta Windowblinds perhaps?

You've got a lot more than icon loss going on. This sounds like maybe a boot sector virus or some other type of malware.

Maybe your only choice is a format and replacing it all with the Acronis Image.

If you can, though (and have made a boot disk), then in Safe Mode (boot from the CD into Safe Mode) run with the elevated command prompt

C:  chkdsk /f /r

That should restore any problems... it will also give you more info.

If that doesn't fix it, or if you can't run chkdsk /f /r  then I'd say format and reinstall your Acronis image.

Ah I fear its worse than a virus, it's that old demon called DRM again.

No viruses according to a full scan with NOD32, I've restored from a system image. This time I was able to uninstall Windowblinds and reinstall it. After I reinstalled it I got "Windowblinds does not appear to be installed correctly on your system". So I clicked to fix and it demanded I activate it again, now I get "Maximum activation requiests from this IP address reached".

Great thanks Stardock, guess I won't be renewing Object Desktop again next year if thats how you treat paying customers :(

I would suggest you give support@stardock.com a chance to help you, before making any judgments about renewal. Remember, outline the problem and wait until a person answers before sending any further emails as that will reset you to the end of the queue. Also, remember it's a holiday weekend and there'll be a backlog of emails requesting help.

Request a reset of activations on your account. Keep in mind that Monday is a holiday.

Done, above post written out of frustration as well, you must understand. I am sure I can live without my Windowblinds skins for a day or two.
