FE - Some questions

I like some of what I've read about FE and am concerned about some others so thought I would ask some questions:

1. What are the biomes in FE and how are they different than WoM?

It appears there are still only three biomes (Civilised, Blighted and Fallen) but it looks as though only Civilised is controllable (or desired) by the player.

2. What races can be played and how do races respond to each other.

If the Fallen biome is not a desired location for the player then am I right in assuming that only Kingdom style races can be played? And will there be racial disharmony between particular races and affinities with others?

3. How is technology different in FE?

It was mentioned in an interview that technology will be more elaborate. I have a real problem with how much impact some tech levels have in WoM while others have very little impact. I also hate that some of the tech trees are critical in every single game and others have practically zero importance. Case in point: Why do races need to research the ability to create a party? Surely any group of people would be able to arrange themselves in a group. There are some really basic abilities that should be a given in WoM but have been shuffled into the tech tree for no good reason. I hope that tech in FE has much less impact and is much more strategic than in WoM.

4. What impact will the RPG aspect have?

Are we looking at a true RPG such as Baldurs Gate with one playable faction but in a random world? Or are we looking at a 4X game with some RPG elements like HoMM? I have to say that hearing about the RPG aspects then only seeing images of fights against boss-style creatures is making me think the RPG side has been focussed on too greatly. On the other hand, if the artists are wanting to show off their handiwork and this is still very much 4X with some pockets of boss-creatures then that would be very cool.

5. How will quests be different in FE?

Quests were another half-baked idea in WoM. Are these going to be dropped or polished?

6. How will heroes be different in FE?

In some statements it has been mentioned that some scouts will return very powerful and some won't survive. Was this a reference to heroes? Does this mean that heroes will not be able to stack?

They are the main questions for me. Thanks. :)

Presumably the Fallen biome is not desired for Kingdom players, but it is desired for Fallen players.

It's still a 4x game. "Boss creatures" are defeated with armies. Whether there are more or less RPG qualities than HoMM remains to be seen, but the template they're basing the game off of is Master of Magic.

Polished. And greatly elaborated upon. They're one of the main things Derek's been focusing on, and likely the source of many of the "Boss Monsters" you see.

6. How will heroes be different in FE?

Heroes will be given "Traits" (equivalent to feats or perks in other games) that give special abilities, adding mechanics or boosting stats in some situations or whatever else.

Does this mean that heroes will not be able to stack?
End of quote
Almost certainly not. Why would it mean that?

I'm not a developer, but I have read some of what the developers have said. To the best of my knowledge...

Question 1: What are the biomes in FE and how are they different from WOM?

This post by Mr. Frogboy himself confirms that the land of Elemental is still divided between "good," fallen, and barren. However, it also seems to indicate that fallen land will no longer be "evil land" and thus, presumably, also desirable (if you're playing as the fallen, that is).

Question 2: What races can be played and how do races respond to each other?

"A tech screen where players can plan out there research goals... In general kingdoms have extra defensive military techs and empires have extra sorcery techs." Mr. Paxton's post indicates that yes, the empires (IE, fallen) are still playable. The indication is obviously strengthened by the fact that fallen lands are no longer the bleak, "undesirable evil" lands they once were.

Question 3: How is Technology different in FE?

In general, I'd recommend reading the "Technology in Fallen Enchantress" post linked in question 2. In particular, regarding the issue of "some of the tech trees [being] critical in every single game [while] others have practically zero importance," the developer post seems to agree with you, as indicated by point 6 of that post.

Question 4: What impact will the RPG aspect have?

A greater impact than in E:WoM. "In particular we are trying to push the RPG side of the game so that it feels like a 4x game set in a RPG world." However, we're still very much in the same genre as E:WoM. "I wouldn't worry about FE becoming just a fantasy war simulator' ...it's 100% 4x."

Question 5: How will quests be different in FE?

Quests will return, although a lot of polish is going into them to keep them from being "half-baked" this time around. I'd recommend checking out the developer diary on Quests for more info.

Question 6: How will heroes be different in FE?

Heroes are receiving a lot of attention in FE as well. For example, the personalities and powers of heroes are being improved upon with the introduction of traits. I do not think that the statements you quoted tell us much of anything about heroes in particular, and it certainly does not indicate that they won't be able to stack.

I hope that helps.
