Ultimate edition population probs

Hi

I played Galciv2 for a few years and loved it, but the ultimate edition is giving me huge problems.

The initial max population for homeword is 16bn. Once it gets to about 10bn approval rating pliumets. I have to turn my homeworld into nothing but entertainment buildings, and even then it doesn't help much.

This new high max pop is ruining the game!

Is there a way to reduce the max-pop limit to something sensible?

Thanks :)

TA (most current expansion) isn't actually that much different than DA, from a morale standpoint.  Granted, you have 15 less morale on your civ capital (HW) than you do in DA, but that's only a difference of about 1 morale building early on, and less than that later.

I imagine the main thing you need to do is research morale techs, or get morale trade goods-unfortunately, the non-Terran trees are not as good for either of these purposes.

If, however, your experience is from DL, then that may be coloring your perspective significantly-I don't remember much of DL's morale, but it's much harder to have 20B+ populations in DA/TA.

Additionally, what is your taxation rate?

You can, if you like, change the food values for farms, civ capitals, and initial colonies in the xml files, which will lower the population that you have to deal with-but there is no way to change how population decreases morale.  I've got a formula around here somewhere if you're interested, but as a general rule of thumb, even with all the morale (not counting buildings) you can expect to get in the game (TA's margin is higher due to extra mining modules), you can't go much over 20B pop a planet at 79% tax without approval going below 20% (at which point you start losing population).

The thing to do is set your taxes low, build no labs or factories in the early game unless you really need them, just market centres or trade centres when population is high enough for it to be profitable.  Your manufacturing and research will suck, but you won't go broke unless you buy lots of ships and buildings.

You can also use spare colony ships to scoop up excess population on homeworld and move them to other colonies, which takes care of the approval penalties from population and helps to make those colonies profitable.

Thanks for the help :)

Think I'll just go back to galciv2, then i can concentrate on expansion instead of homeworld populaion issues.

16bn max with no farms built is just such a daft idea. What were they thinking...?

Imade the mistake once in galciv2 og building too many farms and having this same issue. The answer was to destroy one or two farms. it would be nice if they gave us a similar option here too.

still- at least the game was cheap from the bargain basket. Not much lost.

Actually, I find that 16bn is a healthy population to have on planets for much of the game.  Having low approval on one planet at the start of the game is not as big a deal as you would think.  So long as approval isn't red on the other colonies you will still have population growth overall.

An alternative you might consider; when your population reaches it's max to where your approval ratings start to drop, build a troop transport for anywhere from (2,000 to 4,000 troops). Once built, launch it, (with the troops inside obviously) and set it in a corner of your empire away from the enemy until your ready to use it. I'm not sure about TA, but that's what I do in DA. So I generally have a small amount of transports built up when I'm ready for a major offensive.

Add 4 Baby Making Buildings  (100% population growth) to Low moral and high population planets and don't forget about those farm bonuses 300% too , YUP! |-) , it's time to draft troops from those planets all the time.  You will never run out of troops from a 36,000,000 planet.

Answer to your question build Hot Springs 50% morale and Shrine of the Mithrilar 75% morale.

Thanks for all the tips - maybe i'll give it another try. Hoping the tips dont rely on a level of research that takes long to acquire, as i've never come across them b4.

When I try to keep up the morale of an high populated planet I go for technologies that gives does nice morale keeping buildings. But it depends on which race you go for. If you go for The Torians you will be able to build very nice buildings that gives a high morale boost to your planets, though it is expense early in the game to research does techs. But in the early game you don't have so much people to take care of so it will be no problem. And it is very important to keep an eye with the tax rate! Try to balance the production input with the tax rate if you know what I mean.  |-)  The Altarians also got really nice morale boosting buildings which you can unlock later in the game. Try to make use of them. The cheapest morale boosting tech is called "Temples". It gives you +10 morale and the ability to build temples which gives +15 morale to a planet. The maintance of does are just 1 BC, which is awesome!

The planets quality also affects the peoples morale. If you got a planet which are class 15-20 it will be more easy to keep the morale in that planet. The homeplanet can be hard to keep the morale up later on, because it allows up to 16 billion peoples. But just try make the planets quality better by researching for example, "Soil Enchancement" and one thing with the Altarians is that they got a special structure called "Biosphere Modulator", does makes your planets turn from a class 10 to, if I remember right, class 14 planet! Every planets should have them.

Just ask if you wonder of something I just wrote, maybe we can make it more sensible.

Thanks Mandrell :)

On the whole I'm going to leave TA and DA and stick with the original. Those add-ons - wIth the AI civs on sub-normal I still find they're more than twice my stats when i first meet them. I think those two addons are for the seriously advanced players. For me  the odds are way to stacked against me - especially when i haven't played for a good long time.

But thanks to all for the help on this one :)

You know that you can customize the races, if you want them to have less in economic, refering to abilities, then give them no points to it. You can nerf them that is to say, which means to make them less powerful. And for example the drengin, (which I find most annyoing), is to let them have more points in weapon and soldiering, as they already have "inheret" points on this ones. And that they also have the political party "War Party". It can be really tough to let them go for such advantage.

The expansions of this game are quiet changing from the DL (Dread Lords), but it just adds more challanges, new events, new races and new galaxy setups. I found at the moment does "Mega Events" really game breaking but sometimes they are just absurd, though challanging. One of them I really get annyoed on are that one that takes away some of your planets (Jagged Knife organization). The one I like are that agent mass event. When all civilizations gets agents randomly on all owned planets. So now I have unchecked the Mega Events option for awhile. If you find your game settings uncomfortable you can message me for some tips.  |-)
