Can Fences display folder contents?

Hello,

I have been using the free version of Fences and there is one feature which would be really nice to have in the pro version...  Is Fences able to display the contents of a folder on the desktop, rather than the folder itself?  It's nice to be able to sort collections of files into a fence, but when connecting remotely to my desktop folder the fences don't do any good.  I would like to have a folder on the desktop for remote access, and for Fences to display the icons in this folder as its own fence.

Is this possible with the full version?  If so, I'll probably buy it right away.

Folder views would indeed be a great functionality to add for the next version of Fences!

Sometimes when you are working on several projects, you may want to sort your files properly into folders and still being able to display them in your fences. As such, Fences is great. With folder views added, it would be... awesome!

For example, I'm working with different computers and different OS (Windows, Mac and Linux), and also several OS on the same computer, so I do a lot of folder synchronisation, either through a shared disk partition or through the internet, to keep my current files updated and easily accessible accross all my environments. It would be wonderful if Fences could display the contents of my shared folders!

So it sounds like this is a feature other people might like to see as well.  I may look to see if there is a place to make suggestions in this forum.  As it stands, Fences is a nice little free program, and I don't really need the full version for any of its additional features, but this one would push me to a paying member.  Seems like some other people feel similarly.

Thanks for the responses!

Same as CinciTech: for the moment I'm not sure whether any of the full version functionalities would *really" add anything for me, so I'm still undecided about making the switch.

But a "folder view" option would make decision much easier for me: the very moment it is made available, I will buy the full version!

Folder view is not currently possible, but this has been requested before, and is on the feature wishlist.

Dear Startdock Support,

Actually I bought Fences assuming it would allow displaying the contents of a particular folder on the file-system.
I think it's a major feature and you should increase its priority in your TODO list of the Fences tool.

In alternative or additionaly to that feature it would be great that you added up a simple command-line utility that allowed moving files both ways, between anywhere in the filesystem and the Fences themselves.

You could designate a Fence in a command line tool usage like @Fence:"My Fence".

By having any of these implemented (folder-contents-display or command-line-utility) a user could easily display on desktop log folders, program output folders, send files to a specific fence through a cron-job (using any windows cron-job program like zcron) that would periodically download user specified files from the web and place them on the user desktop.

A lot could be achieved just by adding one of that 2 features (or by both).

As a 3rd request for development, and albeit it's only an aesthetics one: it would be great that you allowed the fence name label to be disabled in terms of being highlighted anytime the user has the mouse over over a given fence, (and has previously locked the fences). This would give the user the feeling that fences have been engraved to the desktop, not allowing accidental user changes, and are not "living beings". Having the labels "become active" as you currently do tends to distract the user when he's moving windows around the desktop, thus decreasing his performance and productivity. I thus ask you to kindly consider this enhancement.

Thank you for your great tool and looking forward for this new improvements,

Best Regards,
opusensemble

As an update, the developer is looking at getting folder fences implemented. Fences will likely remain GUI-configured (versus CLI), however.

Looking forward to this feature for a long time. I too will purchase full version for this feature alone.

How about fences in a folder?  Fences on the desktop are great but they would work great in some folders as well.

How about Fences within Fences (like folders in folders).  But you wouldn't see the nested fence unless you moused-over its placeholder icon.
