Symbols of Ships and Planets on star map not correct

I recently reloaded GalCiv2 on to my system running windows 7 professional 64 bit. The game installed and most of the functions operate correctly except for the images on the star map. Instead of the well-done icons representing planets and ships I only get small dark blue symbols for the ships which are very rough interpretations of the actual icon and small white circles for the planets (the more filled in the circle the better the quality of the planet). They are difficult to pick up on the screen and detract from the game. Everything else works as expected. Could I be missing the artwork for the planets and the ships?

Any help would be welcome.

Set the tactical zoom slider in the options back to a more middling setting. It determines what zoom level the game switches between standard and simplified mode at, so setting it all the way to the end will put it in one or the other mode permanently.
