Idea for new site

I've noticed that the site slashdot.org has become something of a meeting place for people using *nix operating systems who want to engage in a bit of windows bashing. I also love the way that when a security hole is found in IE, they act like it's the first time anyone has found a security hole in any OS, and instantly forget about the 50 security patches per week added to the Redhat errata collection.

What I was thinking is that people who use Windows, and want a forum to bash *nix users should have somewhere to go. How does Backslashdot sound?

Heh, /. isn't exactly a site made to bash Windows. It's true that it's userbase is primarily Linux users and they tend to look down upon companies like Microsoft, but /. itself is just a tech news site.

Just like Mac zealots Linux zealots are in small numbers compared to the amount of computer users out there. This is one of the reasons they get so goofy about their respective OS's. Those in the minority tend to yell the loudest. You'll find that most Windows users couldn't care less about the OS and just use the computer as a tool to get things done. Dunno how popular a "*nix bashing" website would be.

Also do understand that one of the reasons the /. community has such a loud voice is the sheer magnitude of the site. It's one of the largest out there. You'd be pretty hard pressed to get that much of a following to any new website, much less a "scr3w l1nuX, w1nd0ze r00lz" type of gig.

I doubt if the admins/users of such a site will have the IQ to even get it on-line...muhahahaha.

But seriously, there are a lot of immature people in ./, that are usually balanced by other user comments "cool off, hotshot".

I do think you'd be hard-pressed to find many technically-savvy users who think Windows (as an OS) carries some major enhancements over *nix, and linux in particular. except comfortable GUI, MAYBE.

Personally I like Lunix, but at the end of the day, the software support still isn't there. Sure, you can get email apps, web browsers, drawing packages etc that run under Gnome, and support in games is rapidly increasing, but there are a few key apps (Homesite, Photoshop, Flash etc) that you just can't get on Linux, and I need them to do my job, so that rules it out as a full time OS for me. As for this myth of great uptime, I have yet to see any evidence that this is true in Lunix (not so in Unix). I find that after launching a few badly programmed apps/games, Lunix is just as prone to crash as Win2k. Plus it's a lot harder to use and configure. For now, I'll just use Lunix as a hobby OS, and as a server, but for workstation, Win2k is where it's at.

ok, but I'm talking mainly about a platform for building production systems:

Let me ask you this:
say the army has decided to make all of its fighting vehicles - planes, ships, tanks - completely automatic, and run by computer software. They are in a debate whether to choose NT or Linux/*nix...What would you choose?
This is no science fiction - The US navy has one experimental, completely un-manned warship run by NT - The U.S.S. Yorktown. And they have already lost connection with it for several hours at some point.

For desktop apps, w2k is it, that is true.

oh oh - this thread is becoming /. like...

Do I need to spell-check "/."? I see it referred to up there as "./".......
