Fences does not appear to be loaded

Fences was working yesterday, but after installing updates to windows and rebooting, Fences didn't startup. When I tried to open fences.exe, it displays a message

"Fences does not appear to be loaded"

It then opens the settings window where everything seems to be normal. I have tried reinstalling it. I uninstalled it, rebooted, installed it, rebooted but the problem still persists.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm getting the exact same problem with my Windows 7 64-Bit Build 7601 PC. I've tried uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, then rebooting again but it gives me the error. Also, if I try to create a new fence it won't work and it will just show the context menu...

I don't have a fences.ink in my startup folder, and it isn't listed under msconfig startup. Isn't on services either.

Fences runs with a .dll file that gets loaded into explorer.  This is what it is reporting is not loaded.  Make sure you have the file DesktopDock.dll (DesktopDock64.dll for 64 bit machines) installed.  Also, is anything running on the system that would unload this, such as another desktop enhancement software?

I'm having this same issue, and confirmed that DesktopDock.dll is installed.  While there is no other desktop enhancement software installed, it seems that Fences stopped working after I installed a few other pieces of software:

  • high-end data acquisition software
  • Adobe premiere elements 9
  • vlc

Any tips on how to troubleshoot this further?  I miss my fences :(

Many thanks!

Running XP 32 bit.  Same error. I've tried everything above to no avail. Help - I love Fences on my other Windows 7 PC.

Same problem here. Running Windows 8, Fences 2.11. Was working just fine, then stops. I would classify it as intermittent. About 50% of the time it fails. Only other "enhancements" are Decor8 and ModernMix.

(UPDATE: I noticed that upon right clicking on the desktop to bring up the context menu, after that point Fences begins to work... but not until then.. Bug?)
