New player question about which version to buy

from Stardock Forums

Ok I apologise in advance cause this has probably been addressed an nauseum but I cannot find anything specifically related to my exact question so I will hope for mercy and ask anyway...

I am very late to the whole GalCiv2 party being an old MOO2 fan I recently saw a friend playing it and really want to buy a copy myself. Problem is Im in the UK and im just not sure how to go about getting the best game experience/version.

My friend was playing Twilight of Arnor and he suggests that its really the main one to have in terms of sandbox campaigns (just his opinion) so I checked on various sites and two versions Endless Universe and Ultimate Edition seem my best option, but it seems these dont have official support yet and cant be patched via Impulse, is this correct?

If it is then whats my best option? Is the newest patch really that important and if so can I download the D2D version from Stardock even though im in the EU?

Any help much appreciated and any other tips or suggestions welcome, thanks in advance.

Oh and thanks for that referral, how funny, did it not occur to you that I might have checked Google already? From the sketchy information available (even on Stardocks own site) it seems us Europeans have access only to the Kalypso owned version (mentioned above) which I think aren't curently patch supported which beggars the question why on earth buy those as I hear the game is quite buggy without current patch support.

Again this is all hearsay from other forums, random articles, reviews (All found on Google) but they arent definitive and they sometimes contradict each other, forgive me for wanting to buy the right version and support Stardock. Christ it wouldnt kill someone to take 5 minutes to explain it to a new player, you have to remember as a person new to this game, I can see about 5 or 6 different boxed and D2D versions to buy they all wildly vary in price (from £6 to £30) and are published by different people, I fail to see whats so simple about that.

patience pays well, man ;) this forum is not so crowded as it maybe seems, and such questions were asked again and again, maybe not directly like your, but to the point

first of all, Kalypso version (GC Ultimate Edition - which I've got) can be patched up to 2.03 (via Impulse)

and which to buy? personally I've never tried Dread Lords or Dark Avatar, so from my point of view Twilight of Arnor, Endless Universe and Ultimate Edition should be ok for you
