A few basic tweaks to RaceConfig.xml

Changes work but only till I select my race.

Ok so, I decided to have a it of fun changing the races over to star trek stuff. I'm not talking major ship-replacing conversion, just tweaking the raceconfig so make things appear more trekkie.

Anyway, I made my first change as a test, changed the colour of the terran interface, changed the race decription and also the race leaders picture. I enable mods and select my folder then restart the game.

It worked, the 3 things I changed had all applied without any problems. Except one thing. If i select another race and then select the terrans again, everything goes back to default unmodded setting. If I restart the game again its modded, till I select another race. I'm not sure why this is happening but its brough my modding to a standstill. I even tried enabling the "example" mod and the terran race does the same with that too! It turns from being Friendly old Abe back to Jenna chasey when I re-select it.

Is this a bug, or have I just screwed something up? I have not changed any game file outside of the "Mods" folder, so I don't understand how a file in one mod could screw up a file in another mod.

Any ideas chaps? I'd dearly love to make a small trek mod.

That's odd. Look in your "My documents/my games/GC2" folder for .RACECONFIGXML files, and then delete them.

Hmm, I did that and my game crashed whenever I ran it again. Also before I did that, I tried running DA first, it claimed its install was corrupt.

So, I think whats happened is something within DA was corrupted which caused TA to spazz out a bit. Doing a full re-install of all  of them, hopefuly that will fix it.

If it all goes well I'll be back to working on the mod by tonight. Not sure how I can explain the lack of Klingon/Romulan cloaking devices though. Still I'll worry about that when I get the game working again. Cheers for your help :)

You can always hope you'll get the infamous "invisible ships" bug...

Also, in reference to what Scoutdog said about the raceconfig files - whenever you save changes to a race (through the customization screen), that version persists until you remove it. You don't actually have to delete the existing files, though; just press Clear when customizing a race, although the original versions will remain as options to play against and may show up if you select random opponents.

I think I tried mashing the clear button previously without luck, either way thats fixed now

This is a confusing game to mod. If I create a new mod folder and the only game file in it is a direct copy of TA's "raceconfig.xml" file, then I should be able to change values without too much trouble. And I've found I can change most things EXECEPT the race name. One I change that then everything appears fine on the "select race" screen, but turns into "generic custom race" when you hit "next".  All because I change the "display name" field. Curious.

Its strange, but it turns out tweaking the existing races to match trek ones is harded than outright making new races.

Oh and as for the cloaking device thing, giving the klingons/romulans "super warrior" ability should comprimise - that way they attack first as if they decloaked (oddly enough this is how BoTF worked too, cloaked ships got 1st hit).

So after a nights fiddling with trying to convert, I think I'm just going to start anew, from a blank .xml rather than converting existing races, its just too unpredictable.

There's no real need to release another Trek mod, but he's just making it for himself. I don't see a problem with that.

Yeah, i wasn't after releasing it. Truth be told i'm making it for my little nephew. I had looked but wasnt sure there was a trek mod, all i found was replacment ships so i'd certainly like a TA version, I'll drop you a pm.

On another note: after spending a day figuring out what thins mean I quite enjoy modding this game, as long as you backup files it all goes quite smoothly :)
