Random Events

I've been making a few negative posts lately so I wanted to discuss one of the things I find to be the best part of Elemental. Random events keep the game flavorful and interesting. I want to start a discussion on the balance of the current events and ideas to get new events. 

Unfortunately there are some events that are just too good and some that aren't good enough.

Best Events:

1. You start next to "bones of a creature". You receive a weapon that is not the dagger. This is a huge bonus. You have basically gained zone control around your settlement for many turns even through creature spawning techs if you have Dungeon Master/Warrior/Assassin.

Balance change: This is very difficult to change. Its a nice bonus when you get it. I feel it has to stay as it is because it of the synergy with the traits listed.  Weapon balance patch has gone a long way to help this.

2. You start next to a female champion(provided you are male). If you think ignore females acquire currency is a plan you're doing it wrong. Females are the most valuable resource in the game. It is not elementium. The faster you can produce offspring the faster they can wreck your enemies.

Balance changes: Add more womenfolk. Surrogate mother diplomacy tech?

3. You get the Sand Golem. You get this guy you win the game. Control of the area is huge.

Balance changes: Nerf this guy please. Add more items to the lowbie goodie huts for variety.

4. You get 25 materials. 25 materials is like winning the lottery. This is probably the best event with getting the mace being a close second. This allows you to get your nearby resources in play quickly as well as produce an early settler. 

Balance changes: This needs to be toned down or the other base resource huts need to be bumped up.

Worst Events:

1. You get the dagger from the creature goodie hut. This thing is possibly the worst goodie hut resource. Gold or materials are far more useful. This is like getting 20g except usually its not useful unless you get it on turn 1. In reality its not even worth the 20g because you cant sell it for that amount.

Balance changes: Remove this as an option from the bones hut.

2. You start next to a male champion(you are male). This is pretty common but still less desirable for obvious reasons. This is especially bad when its a male arcane knowledge champ.

Balance changes: Add more womenfolk. Surrogate mother diplomacy tech?

3. You get the mana tablet. This sucks because the magic system sucks. There is no way to sugar coat this.

Balance changes: It simply needs to give more mana. It was alot better when this could buy you a teleport. This will be much better after the magic re-evaluation.

I'm sure others have good examples these three are the most /facepalm to me.

New Events:

1. Crystal base resource hut. Why not?

2. More armor goodie huts. I've only seen patchwork items and these are epic rare. I guess this is now cloth but a rare leather piece would be nice and on par with receiving the mace.

3. More item huts. The only tier 1 huts are the golem token and tablet if i'm not mistaken.

I don't define these sorts of things as 'Random Events' just luck with placement.

 

Elemental does, however, need the sort of cool random events that are common in Paradox games and many other strategy titles. These events could cover a limitless range of things, from good / bad harvest modifying our food output for X #of turns, to a random event offering a quest, to a random event impacting diplomatic relations.

 

I think that we can probably use the quest system to make some cool random events, but it is going to take some work to figure out...just one more reason to give us a great Quest Editor!

Goontrooper, great idea!  I was thinking about random events earlier and how to have them affect the game in ways that were fun.  Mostly I was thinking of something like having a powerful champion offer to join your faction, or have a unit/building being instantly built. 

 

But I wasn't thinking big enough.  I should have been thinking about M.U.L.E.!

 

Remember how each turn would have a random event that affected resources?  EWoM could have something that does the same thing.  Maybe 10 turns with extra food production or 10 turns of extra iron being mined.  Maybe a lightning storm uncovers a shard in your terratory, or the mountain wumpus gives you gold if you let him go...

Of course, the opposite could be true as well.  Gold viens running out, oasis locations drying out....

Does anyone know if it's possible to modify resources so they can be affected by a random event?

I made a suggestion for what I think would be a good system for random events here.

It would make a more detailed and immersing mythos I believe.

I thought this was a completely different topic as well.  I would like to see some random events. earthquakes and volcanos.  I am a big fan of sliders, so i would like a slider for random events.  ranging from never ------ still in the cataclysm.
