Magic question

I don't understand this. I started a new game, but my Sovereign doesn't seem to be able to learn any magic spells. I tried researching them, but I get a message saying that it will take forever to learn. The last game I played I didn't run into this issue. Can anyone help ?

Are you producing any arcane knowledge?  You should see a number in the middle-lower left of the screen where the arcane research bar is indicating how much arcane knowledge you are producing.  If the number is 0 then you will never 'get there'.

Yup, you can't learn spells until you build your first improvement that produces arcane knowledge or you recruit a champion that produces arcane knowledge

That was my problem, thanks. I guess in my other game I didn't realize I actually built in my town the building to research arcane knowledge. Thanks again !

I played a game yesterday, and had plenty of arcane knowledge points, but the oly spells I was given to choose from were strategic spells, no tactical spells were ever presented... Was there something I did incorrectly or missed?

There were no additional pages (or if there were, the were inaccessible since there was no little arrow in the corner, as I have seen previously.  There were no tactical spells presented at all.  And I even leveled up magic to level four (it was the only option I chose in the spellbook since there were no tactical spells presented).

are you using a custom sovereign?  if so, did you select any of the books of magic?  (fire, ice, air, earth)

if not then you have access to the kingdom/empire spells only.  that is the only other cause I can think of.

Did you have a sovereign with any elemental spell books? Unless you pick an elemental spell book, I don't believe life/death or enchantment have any tactical spells.

Ahhh, that must be it, I think I forgot to choose one while creating my soverign...  Which brings up another question, I looked and didn;t find any way to edit a sovereign once it's been created and saved. Is this true?

How are you with xml? :)

As a software developer, it's one of those skills I have in abundance.  As long as the XML in question is properly documented.  I find it kinda odd there's no way in-game to edit a created sovereign...  I suppose I'll need to read through some modding discussions to find where the XMLs are at, what's in them, etc...  Thanx.

Custom Sovereigns, with a default installation, are in "My Games/Elemental/Units" I believe.  (Game not in front of me right now)

If your Sovereign starts out with enchanting ,you may also almost  immediately (1-2 turns in) start learning the enchantment spells available.
