Map Texture Atlas Size ---- What Does it Do?

This is in the Video options. I can't see that it actually affects anything. Exactly what is it intended to do?
In order to speed up access to the UI and model textures, the game merges multiple ones together into one large texture map. The setting determines the maximum size of that map. How large you can go depends on the allowed texture size and VRAM on your video card, but bigger settings may give a minor performance increase. It defaults to the lowest for compatibility reasons.
It would be nice if someone posts a guide how to set it to an optimal value depending on your system specs.
So bigger resolution equals bigger map or the other way around?
