What is the battle screen supposed to look like?

All I see is my units along the left side and the bad guy on the right side with a huge white area inbetween.

When I click on my unit, the cursor becomes an "X" with a tail and further clicking does nothing.

How is combat supposed to work???

That's a bug. Normally it's a tactical map, with units and everything. Basically, you need to auto resolve.
