Procedure for updating Fences ?

Hi, I was notified via Filehippo UpdateChecker that there is a new version of Fences so I would like to update but have a couple concerns/questions.

Should I just click on their ( FH ) link or (as some programs suggest) should I uninstall my old one first then download/install new version?

My biggest concern is about losing what I already have saved on my desktop in Fences. I guess I have version 1.0.0.0. ( installed October,2009)

Thank you.

Windows XP SP3

IE8

not sure what other info I should post for you

The best way to update Stardock applications is through Impulse:

http://www.impulsedriven.com/downloads/impulse_setup_full.exe

Impulse is a download and installation manager, product activator, and update manager in one. The other option is to install using the standalone installer from Download.com (or FileHippo). Uninstalling the old version before the new version isn't a bad idea. You shouldn't lose your Fences setup, but backing up your snapshots under:

Vista/7: C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Roaming\Stardock\Fences\Backups

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\USER_NAME\Application Data\Stardock\Fences\Backups

certainly is never a bad idea.

Thank you. I did install Impulse yesterday just 'cuz I read that it was required & I couldn't find it anywhere already on my 'puter. ( don't understand how I ever got Fences before, unless maybe I deleted Impulse afterwards ?)  Anyway ..... after I finally found the update spot in Impulse I went back to my Fences to do a snapshot ( I mis-read your post) but when Fences opened I got an error window that said something about "integrity compromised , I should uninstall, then re-install". I took the snapshot anyway. Now I'm wondering if that msg. was just due to the fact that my version is old? , should I go ahead & do the update thru' Impulse or go the uninstall,re-install route?  I have never done a backup of any kind, don't know how, & probably don't have whatever parts/program to do it.

Are you saying that I wouldn't lose my Fences setup even if I were to uninstall my old?

That Impulse stuff is kinda confusing for this old gal, (as my nickname says, I'm 65) I don't do games at all.

Where can I find "forum use instructions/ FAQ's?  I don't know what "Quick Reply" means for one thing, & why do just a couple or so of the "smiles" have a word description popup whan moused over?

oops, getting off track here, so will close for now.

Maybe I should have stated that I'm using the "free version" of Fences.  Does that make a difference as to whether or not I need all this Impuse stuff?  In my list of "All Programs" (from the Start button), when I mouse over Stardock it shows Impulse & Impulse Now, then in the icons down by the clock is Impulse Now.  This stuff is "all Greek to me".

I do like Fences because I tend to put sooo many things on my DeskTop for refering back to 'cuz my CRS is really bad ;) . (I think that's a wink)?

Thank you.

Impulse will allow you to also update the free version of Fences without having to uninstall your previous version. Simply install any applicable updates available under the "Updates" tab in Impulse.

I got Fences updated via Impulse so I s'pose this topic/thread can be closed. However, can someone direct me to "how to use this forum" or FAQ's or something similar ( see #2) in case I have to come back?

Thank you.
