Help for a custom race

techtree, models, ideas etc

I've been working on my own custom race for awhile. (The Grand Imperialum 4 future reference) And I don't mean like one thrown together for a couple games then replaced by a new one, I mean a full completed, all out custom race. Own models, different improvements, completely unique techtree etc.

But after lots of little edits to everything, I find myself at a loss with ideas for my custom techtree. Now so much of how to do it, but WHAT to do it.

You see, I'm basing it off the Minor Race techtree (the classical techtree), and I'm revamping it to be much more friendly to getting huge bonuses to terrorforming and planet quality techs, while also beneffiting from a good bit of soldiering. While completely scrapping the influence line of the techtree. But that doesn't seemed "balanced enough" so I was wondering if you all had any ideas in helping along that path. Feel free to even suggest complete revisions to my tech tree :P

For reference, The Grand Imperialum is basically wat I believe would happen (government/political wise) if the equivilant to the Roman Empire survived to this day, (1000 of years of political supression, sporadic expansionists wars, and frequent rebellions and under world dealings, lots of mixed culture with 0 interference other then anti-govt supression, helps keep the people from revolting, but makes for a weak unified culture).
However their modern policies are more like the yuuzhan vong of starwars (believe technology is inherently evil and corrupts people, have amazing terrorforming abilities that can translate into equally amazing combat skills and other bonus abilities)

Thanks for any help!

Use population growth to reflect the 'Roman' influence rather then 'influence' modifiers.

Rome had an excellent marketing system and the money flowed throughout the empire. Use a financial or banking system that will generate monetary growth.

Roman Legions were well trained, so use a troop modifier for ground combat. Also assume that their combat ships would be armed (not with the greatest weapons) and well trained. A combat modifier will work here.

Thats a great idea! And I've implemented it in. Thanks!

True. But the Senate was also inherently corrupt, and wealth was badly distrubuted. In essence it could be a leading cause for so much rebellion throughout the history of my custom race, so I don't think I wana mess with the finance tree. Unless, of course, I redid the entire thing to reflect how corrupt the monetary system is.

I assume you mean for transports? If so another good idea. I was already thinking of putting a heavy emphamis on the "attack" part of the idealisms. This only cements the thought.

I don't know that much about TA unique techs, but for racial abilities, logistics is a definite bonus, as it was a significant strength of the Romans. Of course, GalCiv logistics means something different then historical logistics...

Hatred of technology could be reflected by a weakened or possibly even abolished research tech tree... I have to say, though, that an interstellar civilization that believes technology is evil and must be shunned is a little silly. The Yuuzhan Vong made extensive (total) use of biotechnology; unless your custom race does the same, it's a bit puzzling how they ever developed spaceflight.

The logistics will help alot. Didnt even think of that lol :P

As to the techtree? Most of it was torn out and put into a biotech form. Nearly all of it now steming from the tech "Xeno Biology" I've kept some of the regular race techs (Ie hyperdrive, weapons) because I wasnt entirely sure how to replace all of those in a biological format. But thats generally the idea, their intense focus on genetics do to a "Deadly Viral Plague" on the species has yielded them an unprecidented levle of knowledge on biological applications. Both in warfare and in society. This ranges from "Cloning" (pop. & military bonuses) to "Hive Virus's" (Fleet support) and "Organ Grafting" (Major soldiering increase)

The one thing about custom races I like you can make stronger opponents in twilight of the arnor. What I don't like is i don't have miniturization ability. I like the torian tech tree I'm experimenting with the hive ability I like some of the krynn ability i would like to drop some off for other keep morale drop espianage and influence for economy
