What the hell are space ponies???????

Very simple question:

 

I was playing diplomacy against 3 hard Ai players and doing the normal exploration reserch on a desert planet i got this "Space Ponies!" descovery and achievement.

 

 

Why? What are space ponies? Have I done something wrong? What the hell?!

They do not have any real use in game, but they give you an achievement.

At least not any use that I can find.

For some reason I did not get the achievement when I got space ponies at a pirate base.

Personally I would include in a definition of sane not putting ponies in space.

 

Edit: On the other hand that could just be me. Prehaps I am the weird one for finding this strange.

From my understanding it came from some redoubtably crazy posts from the beta. While that was even before my time in this game, I've come to like them, and it is pretty funny. I mean once you think about it every game needs a mascot, and what else can Sins have except space ponies! :P

There was a group of beta tester who called themselfs the Space Ponies. They sent the Dev team space pony hats and such. As part of the ongoing joke/tribute they add Space Ponies into the game.

They do nothing, but give you an achivement. Ive yet to get them, and I dont know how many games Ive played.
