How do I improve Multiplayer Performance?

Title says it all.  Whats some things I could do to improve multiplayer performance.  The lag fest is just horrible when everything starts rolling.

Thanks

Set all video settings to the minimum.  It won't detract from your experience at all.  Also, since this game is single-threaded and not really multicore, it might help to lock programs like Firefox and IRC to one core (say Core #0) and to lock Sins to another core (say Core #1).  You can also set Sins to high priority.  Also, you should close any other programs you have open that you are not using.

Most of the problem in online multiplayer will come from other people.  You can see who the lag culprit is by opening up the Network Window (F5 is the default key).  Most experienced players have already reduced their settings and know the drill, so I think the problems are normally caused by newer players.  Also, sometimes ICO itself will lag and people can also get some lag on the Internet that has nothing to do with their computer or settings.

Also, your best bet is to play with Small or Normal fleet sizes on smaller single star maps.  Consequently almost all online multiplayer games amongst the pro crowd are played on single star maps, normally the random single stars.

Thanks DirtySanchezz I understand most of what you said except for the Locking certain programs to certainc cores?  ive never ever  heard of that before.  That sounds complicated, but setting Sins to high priority doesnt sound to complicated if you could eloborate on the procedure I would be much appreciated.  Thanks again

I'm not sure exactly what you need to do on Vista or Windows 7, but on Window's XP it's as easy as opening up the Task Manager, looking at the Processes, and then right clicking the program you want to assign to a certain core and choosing "Affinity".

the optimization project imo is not practical for multiplayer. you can't expect to have every multiplayer user download it, and probably some players (like me) use a graphics mod with checksum 0.

I am will to bet that there is a lot more LAN IP than IC multi-player. It's not hard to get your friends to install the same mod your using.

me and my friend tried to do multiplayer with that mod, but it didnt worked for us, it always say that we have different game files. ( mod checksum is the same for us )

we even go that far that i used his installation files but we still get that error. with other mods we dont have any problems to play online, just strangly only with that one. wonder really why it dont work lol
