Going 'up' and 'down'

How is it possible (or even 'is it?') to go up or down during a battle, rather than staying on the disk of the gravity well? I've gone into battle before and noticed sometimes that enemy ships and structures are sometimes above or below me. How is it possible for me to do this? Being able to do something like this would also be great when dealing with some of the ridiculously huge minefields I occasionally come across, too.... :)

I should mention that going over minefields is considered "cheating" in multiplayer but yes you can do this. You have to assign a hotkey to it though in the hotkey menu. I can't remember where it is but it is there under something like Z-axis control or something.

The unit AI will also move on the Z axis if it is quicker to do so or if it doesn't have room otherwise.
