Permanent enchantments/mutations

If i cant breed a ten armed troll... i can make you into one! where's my scalpel?

In Master of Magic i remember there being a cool spell. I cant remember exactly what it was called but it was a permenent enchantment that warped a unit to randomly give it wings, firebreath or armour.

Well i was thinking, wouldnt it be cool to cast a spell like that on your children?

I dont just mean in real life, it could also work pretty well in Elemental.

This is kind of similar to my special spouse idea i suppose but coming from a different angle, and theres quite a lot of possibilities when you think about it.

It would have to be an evil spell and have a chance of sending them insane or incite them to rebel, but the possibilties of beneficial effects it could give are limitless.

Possible random benefit.

  • Wings
  • Random Resistance
  • Eternal Youth
  • Horns
  • Claws
  • Firebreath
  • *cough* Extra arms *cough*

Possible random weakness.

  • Insanity
  • Rebelious
  • Random elemental weakness
  • Infertile

In mom you could also make your own undead from your normal trained city units, using death chanel (I think?) and they would cost no upkeep, like the real thing.

Ah those were the days...

The spell was Zombie Mastery. All units that die in combat would return as undead under the caster's control.

The Demon Lord's Life Steal ability had a similar effect.

Its a shame thee aren't undead in the game. It would make for a good different Fallen race.

Undead might be real hard to mod into the game.... What do they use as a population unit? Skeletons? Zombies? How do they recruit higher end undead? It's tough to turn a Skeleton into a Wraith by just changing it's equipment....

@strager

You might be right. It all depends on how flexible the design is. From what has been said so far, as little as possible is going to be hardcoded, so that you should be able effect your owns systems, i.e. resource, population, etc.

Given that it is Stardock, I'm currently optimistic.

I did a lot of thinking on this one last night.... read through the entire D&D manual "Open Grave" which is all about different kinds of Undead (D&D manuals always make for good research material on this kind of thing).... I still think it would be difficult, but it would be doable.

Essentially you would have to make the Undead have a 0 birth rate. The only way to gain population is to kill things. This would give you Zombie units that can be taken back to a city, and disbanded to become a population unit and Skeleton units which would make for better soliders but could still be turned into populations in a pinch. To get access to more powerful units such as Wights you would have to first create one (from an enemy unit) durring battle (after reasearching the spell). Once you had one, any unit it kills would have a chance of becoming another one.

"Heroes and Chamions" would need to be types such as Liches, and Death Knights.

This would solve the basic issues, but it would still be dificult to balance. On one hand they would be very weak because they have no birth rate, and require acccess to stuff to kill to grow. On the other hand, they could become too strong because they would grow exponentially in each battle they were in.
