Fences Feature Request

Apologies if this is not the right place to place feature requests, I could not find any better place. (Admittedly i did not look too hard.)

And i do know that many requests can not be incorparated, but i felt that i should air my wants rather than keep them in.

(Listed in no specific order, but with numbers if anyone want to reference.)

  1. (per fence setting overriding global default setting) Force lable to be on top or below. (Possible feature lables on left and right?)
  2. (Global setting) Custom padding size inside fences, to allow icons to be pushed down a bit, for those of us not using lables.
  3. (per fence setting overriding global default setting) Selecting anchor point (one of the four corners) and allowing fence to grow to fit icons.
Specify max grow size of fence by ?x? icons.
This would allow fences to resize as per contents instead of pushing icons into "the inner void"
  4. (global) Scrollbar in same color as fence? (This is comming with themes/skins i suppose?)
  5. (global) Change default lable font?
  6. (per fence) Possible alternative behaviour for fade out. Hide icons completly when fading out and leave just fence placeholder visible at specified opacy. On mouseover icons become visible.
  7. Snap fences to opposit sides aswell ? (not just top if fence snap to top of any other stationary fence)
  8. Ability to specify a custom snap distance?  (to allow a gap between fences if you make the one above)

9) Allow docking of sub-folders and "my documents" on the desktop... that might take a bit of work, though.

I agree with ability to customize snap distance (#8). And make snap a universal thing (#7). At the moment I keep my fences at the right side of the screen; if I want to move them to the left they no longer snap correctly. I like a uniform spacing approach to the fences as well. Snap to the top and then allow something like mac os x's clean up or windows' auto-arrange to fix spacing between fences.

I agree with #8. Currently, there is no "snap" except that each side will align with another already placed fence.

My thoughts:

a) snap in relation to the desktop - allow the user to configure padding from each side of the desktop; edges of fences will snap to these

b) size snapping - allow the user to configure a "gride-size", which should be measured in icons; snap the fence to the grid

c) fence padding - snap a fence to this distance from another fence; this is difficult to setup perfectly on a large sized screen for the first fence (the rest of the fences will snap to the first placed fence(s))

Also, I think more control should be given to the automatic layout. For instance: allow the user to select the minimum height and width of all fences and the amount of space between fences.

All and all, it's a nice program. Definitely has room for improvement though.

Thanks for your feedback. These are good suggestions.

I love all of those suggestions!

One of my own: Tile and List view for icons. I think that MS should have done this a long time ago, and would love to be able to do it with Fences.

Hi,

We are putting together a plan for a Fences 1.1 release and will take these suggestions into account.

BTW - Did you all notice the new feature for suppressing the icon shortcut graphic?

Hide your shortcut graphic

Please let us know what you think of this new feature!

I would LOVE for fences to snap to a specified distance from other fences.  It already has snap-align, this would make it perfect.

Thread is 2 years old...so links are unlikely to still work.

I'd like the ability to designate a fenced area for text only -- and make it like a permanent and persistent notepad that i can paste text into and out of.  Another idea is to designate a fenced area as list the last ten objects copied to the Windows clipboard.  I can see either of these features to be extremely useful in my day-to-day work.  I LOVE the ability in Fences Pro to designate a fenced area for all new icons.
