Multiplicity Lag on Secondary machine with 1.24

i haven't had this problem in the past, but now i'm getting serious lag on the secondary monitor.  it's connected via network cable, not wireless, has worked for years just fine.  any ideas on what i can try?

i did try searching for this, but search doesn't work so well, at least for me.

thanks.

Serious lag would point to one of two issues.

1) You have a firewall app running on one of the pcs thats slowing the packets.

2) You have a firewall app / buggy network card thats ignoring the setting to send packets now vs when it feels like (for efficiency).  If this is the cause then you may be able to work around this (at a network bandwidth cost) by enabling the "Enable if your mouse seems to move once a second" option under Advanced user settings - on the right click menu).

Actually there is a third case which is you also have a wireless network and windows has decided to send the packets via that instead.

hmmm, while i'm not going to say any of this is true or not, because i don't know and i will test these ideas, it's not running wireless, and this is a new issue since the latest release, i've been using the same desktop and laptop together at the office for a year and not experienced this.

now, it could be something my internet security suite is doing, and didn't before, because of something they updated.  i will disable the firewall entirely first and try that.

heh, firewall was already disabled lol, so i guess it's not that.  i went ahead and enabled that advanced user option, but what i want to know is nothing has really changed on my end, so is it possible this could be a multiplicity bug with the latest update?  or is it definitely with my setup?

It shouldn't be a MP change because the communication code did not change in MP 1.24

This is the first report I have seen of lag showing up in MP 1.24 so its probably a local issue of some sort.

well, very possible, so far that advanced user option seems to work, so thats fine by me.  what exactly does that option do?

If that option is helping then you have something on your machine messing with packets and in particular the nagle algorithm setting.

MP is padding its packets to force the sending when it wants when that option is enabled.

well, i was wrong, i'm still experiencing lag. not sure what to try next.

is it possible tweak 7 could do this?

It is always possible changing OS settings could have an impact.

What times do you get when you ping the other machine from a command prompt?

Pinging MICHAELLAPTOP [10.0.0.97] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 10.0.0.97: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

Reply from 10.0.0.97: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

Reply from 10.0.0.97: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64

Reply from 10.0.0.97: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for 10.0.0.97:

    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms

Internet performance tweaks may affect this.  Try setting them to defaults.

well, with the tweaks off, don't know if i even had them enabled, but i set it to default in tweak 7, still the same problem.  as i've stated before, this is a new issue that i haven't had until the most recent update.  any other thoughts?

Anything else on the system that would touch traffic before it leaves the box?

not that i know of, is it possible to get an older release so i can see if my problem goes away?

ok, i will do that, thanks!

ok, i sent an email.

ok, well i got an older version, and that didn't seem to fix the issue.  so any other ideas i can try?  let me state that i notice the lag if cursonFX is running on the secondary, also, if i am having windows 7 switch wallpapers, i notice it will also lag when it switches walls, but, this hasn't always been the case.  Live Mesh also seemed to add to the lag, disabling that made a difference.

it used to work perfect with my 2 machines here, the secondary is a Dell XPS 1530 laptop, with cored 2 duo T9500 2.60GHz, and 4GB or ram, windows 7 32 bit.

any thoughts?

For me I cannot run CursorFX and Multiplicity at the same time on any machine, some serious lagging and disappearing cursors going on then. Maybe that is an issue for You, too ?

yes it is, i actually had a case open for it, let me see if i can find stardocks response on that.  nope, can find all of them but that one lol.  anyways, it was something after a few weeks of troubleshooting, they finally just told me it's a problem with microsoft directX or something.  now, i never had these issues with cursorXP on windowsXP, and the big problem isn't that the cursorFX cursor disappears, it's that the windows default pointer also disappears so i have no cursor at all

Jep. And that one is NOT fixed in the new version of FX also.

The problem with the cursor vanishing with Multiplicity when you use CursorFX is a bug in CursorFX.

Not sure why support would tell you it had anything to do with DirectX as it doesn't.

i figured as much, thanks for the clarification

ok Neil, so what would be my next step here with MP?  my primary machine was formatted about a week ago, still showing the symptons on the second.  the second machine i have disabled all services and startup with msconfig, except for MP, still showing the issue.  i'm thinking i should reformat that machine and see if it still occurs or not.

to me it seems GPU related, and anything that uses it seems to kill it, i recently had an overheating problem which dell came out and fixed but it could of damaged the GPU, i think i'll run some benchmarks on my graphics card and see what happens before i reformat.

i don't want to reformat, but i really need MP, unless you have any other ideas?
