About to start online multiplayer, hints, tips, written/unwritten rules

I'm waiting for my copy of Demigod to arrive, so I thought I might get a headstart at what its actually like to play this game online. Most, if not all, games where you have people cooperating and interacting, have certain rules. They might be written down but might as well be a set of unwritten ones that everyone knows about and plays according to. Failure to respect such rules leads to misunderstandings and silly mistakes, which I would like to avoid.

Is there any such rules existing in the demigod community? Stuff that should/shouldnt be done at all costs etc? Would be nice to get to know them the easy way

Hints and tips regarding what demigods to pick, what stats/items to go for and which citadel upgrades to be purchased when would be welcome. I have played this game a bit already, but only comp-stomp with friends, and that can hardly be compared to playing against other people <_<

Looking forward to start playing it online, and as said, hints and tips are most welcome!

For the first 10 games, use Charm of Life as your Favor Item (click the circle all the way to the right with the Trophy Symbol)

For your next 90 games (when you have enough Favor Points), use Blood of the Fallen. This is regardless of your demigod, build or playstyle. Just use it. More expensive favor items are not (usually) better. Once you've gotten 100 games under your build, you can start branching out and experimenting. Some of the favor items are really nice (Blade of the Serpant, Ring of Divine Might, Staff of Renewel, Cloak of Night, Swift Anklet) they just require significantly more skill ase. nd specialized builds to use effectively.

Items:

If it gives you +HP you should probably have at least 2 of those. If it gives you +Armor, you should have 1 of those. If it gives you mana, you should have at least 1 of those, 2 if you are having mana items.

Three of your 5 items should always be Unbrekable Boots, Vlemish Facegaurd, and Nimoth Chestplate. The other two depend on your particular build, but 1 is typically a health item (Narmoth's Ring, Haubrek of Life, Banded Armor, Deuler's Cuirass), and the other a mana item (Plenor Battlecrown, Scaled Helm). But a lot of build incorporate other items, most commonly Boots of Speed.

Etiquette:

- Talk. Talk. Talk. Talk. When you play with high-level players, we actually tend to Ping. Ping. Ping. But you should talk for awhile.

b == back. And seriously back. You should right click some place far behind you and not stop. No, you don't need to stop get get in "one last spit/fireball/pounce/spine attack". Unless your alpha-strike has some sort of direct benefit to you getting away (Pentitence, Bite), you don't use it.

oom == out of mana. Seriously. No, you won't get a shield or a heal. And I won't help you fight much either

tp == teleport. Typically accompanied with a ping. You should port to that location. You do have one (three), right?

shop/brb == they are going to base. Be careful and don't go off fighting 2v1 because you aren't getting any help

- tell people you need help. People are typically much more welcoming to a newb who admits being one than someone who says they have "mastered X character"

- Play Beast, Erebus, Oak for your first 25 games. In that order. Do not touch Queen, Demon Assassin, Regulus or Rook until you have 100 games under your belt. Occulus and Sedna is fine after the first few dozen games.

Whenever you're about to play a character for the first time, play against the AI or read the builds/guides on the strategy board. People have already figured out things so you don't have to, and can get you playing real games faster, so I really recommend taking advantage of it. That doesn't mean the guides are always right, but they'll definitely set you on the right track.

The community is really sensitive to stats, which is a mixed bag of good and bad. When you first get on, you want to start or join a game with "Noobs" in the title, since no other games will accept you. Games fly by, so don't think 100 games is hard to get (it only takes about a week or two of casual play), but until then, stay strictly in noob games.

Also, whenever you see someone playing a guy you want to learn, and they beat you or do amazingly awesome on your team, SAVE THE REPLAY! Open it from the main menu and look at what items they chose, what they spent their money on, how they built their demigod, and how they handled themselves on the battlefield. It's a whole lot easier to learn from than losing game after game with trial and error.

Thanks for the quick and nice replies, they are most appreciated

Is there a place where people have posted replays of good matches? I've found some scattered around on the different forums, but if there is such a page it would make things easier ;)

If you have any guidelines as to what citadel upgrades to buy and when to do so it would be great. Most matches I've played I usually buy the gold thingie asap but the rest of the upgrades are more or less randomly bought whenever i have the cash.

Go to Gamereplays.org for replays.

Who do you intend to play? Don't listen to everyone telling you to play UB/LE/Oak, play whoever you think you'll have fun with. The point of newb games is to learn so it wont matter if you biff a few times.

Plus, we have way too many people playing those three anyway ;)

Plan out with your team who is going to get Currency/Structure Fort./Exp. Exp is less important, but the sooner you get currency the better. Structure fort is cheap so its easy to afford.

But welcome to Demigod! Look me up and if I'm online, I'll be happy to play a game with ya. They're offering OT at work this week so I'm gunna live here for a bit, but after that I should be on plenty :)

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind :)

I have been playing Sedna the most. She is fun to play, and I like the bonuses she gives to the team. Also she is less squishy than some of the other demis. DA is easy to play with vs the computer, because they suck at picking targets. I do however think that vs players DA would be a favorite target, and could easily be a feeder char :P . With a decent strategy I guess i could do fine with her, gonna check out some vids on how ppl are playing her.

Thanks for the link and the tips :D

really dont play da, reg or qot. you will most propably make your team lose. always have a general on your team. if you play general yourself: share your monks. which means, give one monk to the other lane (if there is no general)

only really important cit upgrades are in that order from early game to lategame!

1. fortified structures (get it first. really)

2. currency 1. (second thing one of your team should get)

3. priests (only first if you dont have a general which should never happen and even then questionable!!)

4. angels, then cats and giants.

sometimes... if you have the money: currency 2

lategame invest into your creeps!! nothing is worse than when someone gets a mageslayer but the enemy invests into creeps. if they are good you wont get their portal cause they get cheap locks as well and they use them. so your mageslayer is wasted but the giants will be knocking at your cit soon.
