How to reclaim screen space (mainly explorer)

Hi, I'm new to windows 7 and I'm trying to figure it out how to make windows (mainly windows explorer) to use less screen space.

One of the things I would like to change is the vertical space used when listing files. I have the same problem in the favorites menu in firefox, but that can be overcome by using the classic theme (although it's very ugly)

I don't know what program I need or what I need to modify to get this. Is it just the icons? How can I get that compact listing I had in windows XP?

Thanks

I saw an article about the real esate win7 taskbar takes. Its about another 8 pixels or so. The best option was to use small icons and some other settings.  Here it is.

Hope it helps. I dont own Win 7 yet. Otherwise id dig a bit deeper. This sounds like something that would bug me as well lol.
